[SLUG] Unwanted laptop wanted

2009-07-31 Thread Jim Donovan
For use by an invalid, I'd like to buy an old laptop at the right price. It
need only be capable of running Firefox so the patient can browse websites and
hotmail. It needn't have a hard drive as it could be booted with a Knoppix
CDROM. It needn't have a fresh power battery as it could be run from the
plugpack. It should have USB so we could give it a mouse and a 802.11g adaptor.
It should also have a working NIC.

If you reply, please indicate where I can collect it from you.

[SLUG] Linux and VOIP

2009-07-31 Thread Jonathan
Hi All,

Maybe I'm just typing the wrong thing into Google, but this seems a hard
topic to get info on. Here's what I want to do:
Connect my existing land line phones into some piece of hardware so I can then
use my cable internet connection to make calls.

Some people seem to think you can use a normal 56K (voice) modem to do this,
with some software on my linux box. (seams like the cheapest option!)

Others seem to think there is specific hardware to connect a landline phone
into an ethernet to convert the phones to VOIP phones. Infact netcomm sell
these, but require direct connection to the modem, which sounds like it could
present problems with the bigpond heart beat, and my remote access. Apparantly
netcomm don't make reliable hardware anyway, something I would think inportant
for this application.

Oh, and I know all this could be done easily if I just went to an ADSL2+
plan+voip, but I'm a long way from the exchange (3.8km by google maps)

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Jon

It's called an ATA (Analogue Telephone Adaptor)

seems like a lot of messing about

That's not a long way, Use tpg.com.au/maps to workout what speed you'd
likely get.

Suitable devices include most of the Billion 6xxx series, Linksys PAP2
and clones. I'm using a Zyxel 2000 series that is doing fine. It was
on special for about $30. Most of the time you'll need to spend around
$50-100 to get something capable of 1-2 phones.

 Any thoughts?

 Cheers

Your looking for an ATA Adapter such as this one:
http://www.globaltekvoip.com.au/Products_pages/ATAs/Grand_H286.html

See http://www.3cx.com/PBX/FXS-FXO.html for some more info about this.
