[SLUG] VPS hosting

2009-10-01 Thread Ashley Glenday
Can anyone recommend a good, cost effective, virtual hosting provider?
I'm unhappy with the host I'm using now charging to reboot the server
and for data transfers in and out. Basically what I'm looking for is a
server I can reboot myself (I accidently flushed iptables twice

Any help is appreciated.

I really recommend vpslink.com

There's a range of the latest Linux OS's on XEN (and OpenVZ) that you
can get hosted starting from US$7.95 per month. I'm on Link 2 (5 GB
Disk, 150GB Bandwidth 128MB RAM) for US$13.95 and it's been able to
run Ubuntu 9.04 server and anything I throw at it.
The service is good; after reinstalling the OS multiple times I came
across a problem, but logging a support ticket got it fixed in less
than a couple of hours. Upgrading the plan, I was able to use the same
server with the upgraded specs the next day.

Or for something more robust, try the parent company, Spry.
http://www.spry.com/

For your local Australian option, I'd recommend MDwebhosting. I've
used them for webhosting and I've heard good for the VPS vslice.

Linode is WONDERFUL, and I recommend it wholeheartedly. Fantastic staff,
very reliable and speedy servers, awesome support (the staff hang out on

 Ashley, I've been using ATU's $13.20/month mini
VPShttp://www.atu.net.au/?section=pricingfor a little testbed project and
so far it's going very well (OK their web
ordering system is a little clunky but you can certainly start and stop the
VPS from it, and service talking to them is great). This VPS is decidedly a
'mini' size allocation, but if you want something much bigger they're got
the capacity on hand and I reckon they would do you a sensible deal (It's
not my place to say more than that). They've been around in one form or
another for at least 8 years. Their servers are in equinix and have a fair
 bit of good peering.

hmm... just realised that doesn't read informatively. I meant to say Equinix
in Sydney, in that there are Equinix data centres in other places too :)

uh.. also meant to reply to list

On data transfer, if you want quality in Australia, you should expect to
pay for it. I've worked in the wholesale/infrastructure level hosting
industry and unless things have changed a lot in the last 3 years or so,
data links here cost probably about 10x what they do in many other countries
(however an Australian IP address, lower latency and less bandwidth
bottlenecks from your customers' ISPs can offset the cost issue).

On structure, I think you'll find most hosting providers charge for IN+OUT
these days. Those that don't will have to have some sort of ratio and
pricing to effectively charge in both directions anyway - either explicitly
in their terms, or done quietly in the background. Otherwise they risk
running highly congested traffic in one direction and/or running at a big
loss, as they'd get clients taking massive arbitrage advantage of the
situation. After all, at some level their is a wholesale provision of links
and peering, which cost money to build, power and/or rent, and have a finite
 bandwidth capacity in each direction.

I'll back that up as well.

The thing that impressed me was that I was able to do an upgrade from
Hardy - Intrepid - Jaunty and the whole process to about 15 minutes.

I've never seen an upgrade go that fast on real hardware even with a
local deb mirror.

The best VPS pricing I have seen is at http://www.thenynoc.com/vps.htm:

$US10 per month
10GB disk space
1TB data transfer
512MB RAM

Extra IPs $US1 per month.

Their upgrade path to dedicated servers seems to be good value too.

last few months the usage has been 32GB and can no longer keep it with

Austdomains VPS servers?

Thanks again,

You will find that the higher prices are reflected in a different kind of
service. They run it on VMware and your server can migrate to a different
host during maintenance or if a physical host fails. This also means it's
running off a FC SAN.

Most VPS are run off a single server, local disk. If something happens to it
you are down.

You get what you pay for basically. I personally use Linode because my
priorities are cheap then quality. If I was running a business off it, the
extra cost would probably be worth it.
