Re: [SLUG] linux newbie needs a consultant
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Are you able to bring the 2 laptops to the next SLUG meeting? Please back up any files you want to keep. For the Nokia Booklet: What is the output of 'lspci' and 'lsmod'? lspci should show the model of the sound and wifi controller lsmod shows the list of loaded drivers Neither command requires root privileges to run. For the MacBook Pro: MacBook Pro appears to be an Intel Mac. I strongly suspect it uses EFI firmware to boot and GPT disk partitioning scheme. EFI boots straight into the native processor mode. Is this a 32-bit or 64-bit machine? Your boot medium will need to be prepared for this. It may also have a BIOS (which may or may not need to be enabled depending on how you want the machine to boot). You can test by inserting a Live DVD and holding down 'option' (alt) while booting to display a boot menu. If an optical disk icon appears which is misleadingly labelled 'Windows', then the BIOS is enabled. If another optical disk icon also appears, with the correct label, then the DVD supports booting in EFI mode (by selecting the one with the correct label). I have resolved GMA500 Poulsbo problems, but I have not been able to resolve sound problems and networking problems. (I'd like to be able to fileshare with mac over the wifi. I also would like to set up the pretty but aging MacBookPro to dual-boot. There are a number of obstacles which I won't detail here but if someone has experience with dual-boot macs I would really appreciate your help! Re: [SLUG] Request for some network help, please.
Hi William, Are you able to provide more information in regards to you connectivity trouble? eg. connectivity dropouts, cannot connect, no network interface etc. Furthermore, can you post an output from the following commands to help us better assess your situation: $ nm-tool $ lsmod $ lspci -v | grep Ethernet $ sudo iwconfig thank you Lubos On Mon, May 26, 2014 at 3:06 PM, William Bennett wrbennet...@gmail.com wrote: I was having trouble getting WiFi connectivityl. As far as I can see from Step 3, there *are* no specific drivers for this adapter; so I should find generic, or proprietary drivers and instal then. Have I got it right thus far? [SLUG] Light Linux Permissions help for constantly running processes and Samba Share access
Hi, I'm struggling getting some production programs to run on a new Linux system. These programs have been working for so many years and it seems that I've forgotten how to set them up. Maybe it's different on this server-distro. Not sure. It's Zentyal - ubuntu based. village@server-ivm:~$ uname -a Linux server-ivm 3.8.0-39-generic #58~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 2 21:33:17 UTC 2014 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux There are some python programs that auto-run and always run: village@server-ivm:~$ ls -la servertasks total 100 drwxrwxr-x 2 village village 4096 May 23 12:00 . drwxr-xr-x 28 village village 4096 May 23 12:05 .. -rwxrw-r-- 1 village village 6207 May 23 12:00 directory_scantxttopdf.py -rwxrw-r-- 1 village village 569 May 23 11:28 runforever_pdfconvertor.py -rwxrw-r-- 1 village village 2826 May 23 11:26 scannerfilecleaner.py -rwxrw-r-- 1 village village 39822 May 23 11:28 spooler.py The programs that need to be accessed are in /home/samba/shares/ivm_dbase: village@server-ivm:~$ ls /home/samba/shares/ivm_dbase ls: cannot access /home/samba/shares/ivm_dbase: Permission denied Yes, I can sudo ls and that will work. But I don't want to. That just makes all the files root and no other users can read/write them. I really want the programs to access the data in the samba shares. village@server-ivm:~$ sudo ls -la /home/samba/shares total 16 drwxrwx---+ 3 root __USERS__ 4096 Apr 23 13:53 . drwxrwx---+ 4 root __USERS__ 4096 Apr 23 13:47 .. drwxrws---+ 21 dlyon __USERS__ 4096 May 23 15:20 ivm_dbase What's a good way to set this up?
