[SLUG] Dial up Modem
I've been told by a vendor that the D-Link internal 56k modem is fully compatable with Linux. Quoted $65. I went into the d-link website, no internal modem is listed but the 560 external is listed. Has anyone had any experience with the D-Link internal modem and is it in fact OK for linux Thanks Bob SuSE-7.0 and 7.3 -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://lists.slug.org.au/listinfo/slug
[SLUG] Graphics Card
Slightly off topic. Further to my enquiry about my NEC laptop and graphics, I have found a driver buried in the original CD which came with the machine, down about 5 or 6 sub-directories. It gives me 800 X 600 as an option, its great but my computer locks up when the screensaver is called. Its presently back to 16 colours. Still a great machine for linux with the help of SuSE's sax2. BTW the NEC Versa Premium CEL marketed by Power Barn and elsewhere with XP factory loaded is actually a Model 7521N and that is the name of the sis video driver. [SLUG] SMC7004ABR
I'm trying to decide between an old 486 for a firewall between my SuSE-7.3/Win98 box and the Internet or using the SMC7004ABR BARRICADE Router/firewall. The SMC has a port for my dial up modem as well as all the other ports for ADSL or Cable. I'm presently on a dial up system with TPG but I'm thinking I might have some use for the ADSL/Cable capabilities in the (very far distant) future. Not much happening in Bonnells Bay these days. The SMC seems to be the only router/firewall with the dial up modem capability. Does anyone have any experience with the SMC router/firewall. At the moment only interested in protecting a home stand alone computer. I've read a few reviews but would like to get some info from experience, especially the linux comunity. Is this a good programmable firewall or is it a mediocre firewall like maybe Zone Alarm. [SLUG] Graphics card
Picked up a nice NEC notebook at the Power Barn. Came loaded with win XP which I promptly destroyed and made a dual SuSE-7.3 and Win98. I have a space for 2 X type 2 cards and am looking first for a decent graphics card, can't seem to find any around this Bonnells Bay area. Any suggestions, nothing too exotic, a plain s3 trio 64 would be good. small bucks. BTW had no trouble installing SuSE on this machine, sax2 did X for me using VESA. A little rough and that's the reason I'd like a half decent graphics card. [SLUG] Sturdy Notebook
Hello list, I'm running SuSE-7.0 and about to load 7.3 I'm looking for a very sturdy notebook, 10lbs is OK, I'd like to be able to switch an HD for a zip, in other words upgrade components. Could I use the term 'mobile desktop' There is such a beast in Canada, got interested in it before I moved to NSW, it runs 100V to 240V so I could send for one, its a Eurocom www.eurocom.ca but I want to buy locally and local. Any suggestions from experienced notebookers. [SLUG] Dial Up Modem
Thanks to all who responded to my questions on the dial up modem system in OZ. It certainly was not my intention to criticize TPG, just to compare it with the norm Again, thanks for the responses, they're filed away for reference. BTW ADSL is not available in this area. [SLUG] Hewlett Packard Printer
Having just set up my Linux Box in Oz I am looking for a compatible printer. My SuSE 7.0 is failrly outdated now (have 7.3 ready to install) so don't know what new HP models are supported although I am assuming that HP deskjet type ptinters will either be supportrd or alternatively I'd be able to download a driver if one was not included. Has anyone recently purchased a NEW HP and found it supported. [SLUG] Dial up modem
Hi, finally made it from Canada, living now in Bonnells Bay. Running SuSE 7.0 as main distro along with Slackware 8.0, debian and w98. Signed up for 3 months with TPG as a provider. Haven't yet configured ppp for my SuSE. My question is about a dial up system here in Oz. I am extremely disappointed with the provider I have, never have seen anything as slow but then I'm not familiar with this kind of connection in NSW, are they all fairly slow. Takes about 3 mins to jump from page to page once I'm logged into a website. I don't mean to complain about TPG, just would like to know if in fact it is normal speed for a dial up modem. Looking forward to participating in your list Thank you Bob Hubbard -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://lists.slug.org.au/listinfo/slug
[SLUG] External Modems
Are external modems the norm in Australia or are there some internal modem cards also available which will work with Linux (SuSE-7.0). Here in Canada it's very hard to find an internal modem other than a (Wi Wi Wi...choke) Winmodem and, of course, they don't have their own brains and depend on Windoze drivers. I use a US Robotics 56k external, what's the situation there? Re: [SLUG] SuSE-7.3
Thanks, Stuart. One sure way to save $cdn.120 and also to drive yourself crazy for the rest of your life. Two factors..a dial-up modem and my age of 72 should certainly cover the rest of my life. Thanks, anyway. I'll see what Santa brings. Tonight is Halloween and them goblins are restless. Minus 5 deg C outside. I think I have everything organized as far as power is concerned. The CPU power supply has a slide switch for 240V and my Monitor is self adjusting, so they tell me at the factory (110-250 not 110/250). As far as the power chords go, I just need to buy one of yours (ours - I'm an Aussie) and I'm in business, the point on the PC box is a universal point. regards, Bob -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://lists.slug.org.au/listinfo/slug
[SLUG] Firewall hardware
I'll be moving to Central Coast NSW in December and have gathered some network hardware to bring with me. I think it is what I will need to put a 486 between me and the dial up modem. I understand cable or DSL is not available to me. I have a screamer of a PC to bring with me, SuSE distro of course, and will pick up a 486 for the firewall when I get to OZ. I'm bringing an SMC 10/100 LAN card and a Linksys 10/100. I also have an RJ-45 cable. Will this hardware do the job? Do I need anything more. Also, as far as software is concerned, there is a lot available, at this time I'm thinking Smoothwall might be a good choice. I'm currently running Bastille on my Linux SuSE-7.0 which dual boots with Windoze. Comments, anyone Regards, Bob Bob Hubbard St.Albert, Ab CANADA -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://lists.slug.org.au/listinfo/slug
Re: [SLUG] Smoothwall
Thanks, Ken. I've been able to download the smoothwall since last posting and will read up on it before I untar it. I understand that it will wipe a drive as there is no partition options during installation, designed for a small dedicated HD on the Firewall machine, I expect. I'll be bringing a spare 500 and an 800mb HD with me for that purpose. I think I'll put this smoothwall on a ZIP disk and hold it until I get to OZ. I have Bastille on my Linux/Windoze box and have it set as best as I can understand the reactive installation. Probably does some good for my dial-up. Regards, PS Really woulkd like to be at Granville on Sunday. PPS Not sure about the protocol. [SLUG] Smoothwall
A few days ago someone mentioned smoothwall so I followed it up. A link goes to forceforge.net but I can't seem to download after selecting the compressed tarball. Is there another site I can use. [SLUG] Cable/ADSL

[SLUG] Router/firewall
Does SMC market a router/firewall (SMC7004ABR I think) in Australia which provides for a dial-up system as well as cable/adsl? It is available here in Canada and could be a consideration when I move to OZ in December. Failing that I will be looking for a 486DX/66 as a firewall. [SLUG] SuSE 7.0
You chaps are really something. 10 responses within half a day. Many thanks, have checked out the two web sites you all have suggested and good info on the prohibitiveness of renting a box in Australia. Unfortunately I don't have a laptop but will work something out maybe with my brother-inlaw in Bonnells Bay. He has an old 486 he has thrown together for us to play with at his place and maybe I could cart that to Gorokan. We'll see. Thanks again for all your assistance. [SLUG] SuSE-7.0
Hello from Canada. I'll be visiting Australia for 2 months Jan-Feb and will be in the area of Gorokan and Forster NSW. I would like to get a dist of the SuSE-7.0, either Personal or Professional edition. I'm currently operating with 6.4 and have had some 5's and then 6.1 before it. I don't intend to suffer the withdrawal of beinfg without my Linux to play with for 2 months so will probably be renting a box. The last time I was in Forster they did not even want to talk about Linux in the computer stores. The shop in Edmonton, Alberta has not been able to make a price deal with the distributors in the US and thus the 7.0 in Alberta is as scarce as hen's teeth. I fortunately do have the single disk which came with the pommy magazine FORMAT. I will bring this with me just in case. Can you help me with some info. Regards, to all.
