I have never experienced a seamless upgrade of any Ubuntu
distribution, so I second the recommendation to do a full backup
before attempting the upgrade. Ubuntu does some fairly vast changes
between revisions, and seeing as you're skipping a whole major release
in the upgrade, bad things could happen.

As for what to backup with, I use ddrescue as it has a nicer interface
for showing copying speed and error rate.

10.04 is the LTS version, so he may want to take that into account
when upgrading.

That's simply not true. Packing shelves in a retail store won't get you
more than $20 an hour, and even that's pushing it.

$25-$30 is not what I'd accept for a job expecting experience. It seems
entry-level to me.

Re: [SLUG] Subscription-based netfiltering (parentally speaking)

2011-06-20 Thread Brendan Molloy
You could also consider the WOT tool: http://www.mywot.com/.

It's ja plugin for a web browser that shows a rating based on child
safety, trustworthiness, etc, so instead of purely blocking, simply
explain to your child links that show up with an orange circle shouldn't
be taken at face value, and red circled links should be possibly avoided
entirely. The ratings are set by users of the client itself, so
crowd-sourced classification.

I've been using WOT for a while now. Very nice for avoiding random
phishing links on Google :)
