Re: Insulting racial terms (was Re: [SLUG] Re: [chat] Version control)

2009-03-21 Thread James Dumay
Because no one else will say it _I_ will.

Please refrain from having these sorts of email discussions on the
SLUG mailing lists.

Lots of people just end up being offended and it does nothing to make
SLUG appealing for those subscribed to the list.

Thanks

I totally recommend Internode - plans are a little more pricey but the speed

connected to internode their support and sales guys have been top notch.

They also have a great software mirror with ubuntu/debian/fedora packages
and the transfers don't go towards your cap.

[SLUG] Nomination: Anna Buttfield

2008-03-25 Thread James Dumay
I am proud to nominate Anna Buttfield for the position of Ordinary Committee
Member.

Anna has been an integral organiser and liaison venue for the SLUG this
year. She has demonstrated an amazing interest in both the SLUG and Free and
Open Source software community in Sydney and Australia.

I feel Anna will be a invaluable member to this years team if elected.

Anna, I would like to thank you personally for the hard work you have been
doing to make SLUG @ Atlassian possible - without you we would not have been
able to put on such a great monthly event.

"If you build it, they will come"

Perhaps this would make a good open source project to produce a player (and
perhaps the backend services) needed for Television stations to distribute
their media.

I think the problem here is not so much that they are choosing propriety
solutions intentionally but that there are no viable, free and cross
platform alternatives for their vision of said service.

Its not crazy - its perfectly rational with the tools at hand. The problem
probably centres around branding and customisation - which Flash does very
well.

[SLUG] Firefox trunk builds with ActionMonkey: JavaScript with JIT

2008-03-12 Thread James Dumay
Hey guys,
I thought Id mention that while rummaging through ftp.mozilla.org I found
out that there are now nightly builds of Firefox with ActionMonkey [1] for
Linux and Mac OS X.

For those who don't know, Action Monkey [2] is the new JavaScript runtime
for Mozilla. It is an amalgamation of the existing SpiderMonkey JavaScript
runtime [3] and Adobe's Tamarin ECMA script Virtual Machine [4].

What this basically all means for users is that the first time you visit a
JavaScript heavy website, that code gets compiled down and cached so that
every time you visit the same page the load and execution of that page is a
_lot_ faster.

Its seriously cool shit.

Check it out :)

Yuck! its not like its bloody hard to hack applications to use GConf!

My flatmate had similar issues to Eric when he upgraded to Gutsy. The
default resource allocation for Tracker is unlimited. So it scanned all 80
gigs of existing data when he first logged in after upgrading.

When I asked him how he liked the new release he replied - "Bloody slow".

[SLUG] SLUG - People turning up to slug early

Hey guys,
Since Atlassian has been hosting SLUG we have had a few people turning up as

Meetings usually start at 6.30pm and doors open at 6.00pm.

RE: [SLUG] Windows Subversion client?

If your developing using Visual Studio give this a whirl:

Its a plugin to Visual Studio 2003/2005 that allows you to use SVN in
the IDE similar to Visual Source Safe.

minutes sometimes.

Another client I'm a bit familiar with is Eclipse, but it's Java and is
going to be heavy on a laptop with VisualStudio already running on it.

Using the command line tools looks very unattractive to them.

Can anyone recommend any other useful clients (preferably Free/OSS)?

The client had been requesting the file by accessing destination port

To add insult to injury I can find nothing in the scant documentation to

Given the number of flyers [sic] handed out for this at CeBIT, I think
the promotion was pretty good. At least as good as other SLUG installfests,
etc, in the past.

I thought about participating with some hands-on fedora directory server
stuff but since the aim was mostly to play with desktop apps and not server
ones I decided against it. I may drop by during the day, though, and perhaps
I'll save the FDS/Samba talk for another time.

Friday 27th of April 2007 - Starts at 6.30pm through to 9.30pm

Where:
Level 13, IBM Building, 601 Pacific Highway, St Leonards

so we have more time to eat dinner, hang out and get to know each
other a bit better.

==General Talk - Martin Visser demoing OLPC ==
Martin was lucky enough to score one of the fantastic One Laptop Per
Child machines (www.laptop.org), so he is going to share with us his
experiences and knowledge with this exciting project.

==Technical Talk - Taryn East "Introduction to Ruby On Rails) ==
The lovely Taryn will give us the scoop on Ruby On Rails
(www.rubyonrails.org) and guide us through the land of web

SLUG Talk Abstract for Nov 2006
---

Darwin is an open-source subset of Apple's Mac OS X. The Darwin kernel
presents a POSIX interface, but is internally an interesting mix of
BSD and Mach kernels and the modular device framework, I/O Kit. The
kernel boasts modern features such as device hot-plug, power
management, 64-bit and soft real-time support.

L4/Darwin (AKA darbat) is a joint project between the Embedded,
Real-Time and Operating Systems group at National ICT Australia and
the School of Computer Science and Engineering at UNSW. The L4/Darwin
project aims to re-factor the monolithic Darwin operating system into
a set of components running on top of the L4 microkernel. By running
the Darwin kernel as user processes, L4/Darwin aims to provide
improved flexibility, robustness and peformance while preserving
binary compatability with native Darwin and Mac OS X.

This talk covers details of Darwin kernel internals and our
experiences porting it to the L4 microkernel. It will also cover
experiments and results so far, as well as future plans.

GTK still doesn't have a native OSX port. It works, but needs an X11
server installed, and just doesn't play along terribly well with the
rest of the UI.

So yeah, as much as I love GTK, I wouldn't really consider it for OSX
apps.

I guess it's one of those negative association things. You're right,
they probably work fine, but 150MB of dependencies and still not
enough is a joke and I don't even know where to get hold of vte-sharp2
for Ubuntu.-2.0.pc

Yakuake on KDE needed: KDE and... Yakuake. Sure, KDE takes up a fair

whoa hold on... the only reason Mono executables have a .exe extension is
because it is defined in the ecma-international standard for the Common

And it can't execute viruses. Besides, if your using Ubuntu, you have all

That looks great, thanks for searching.

I won't be using it though. I've installed over 150MB of dependencies
and now I'm finding .exe files? I nearly have all the support I need
to run the email viruses I'm smugly avoiding...and it still wants
more, so I think I'll just give up, install KDE and try to get yakuake

Re: [SLUG] Novell and Microsoft

2006-11-06 Thread James Dumay

The Novell/MS should really mean nothing to developers who respect
intellectual property of Microsoft - Microsoft and Novell under the deal
(and any Novell customer) are able to share each others respective
intellectual property and allow external developers to extend and contribute
to those projects.

People crying about the entire community not getting covered simply don't
get it... You can be sued now and you could be sued before the deal if you
infringe on someones intellectual property and in some cases, rightly so.

Novell are not handing the keys out to anyones castles, as GPL'd and
similarly licensed software will stay open and free - Novell can't give this
away on their own terms.

Also take in the fact that the deal is very much product differentiation for
Novell - offering security in the knowledge that Microsoft will not come for
their first born son any time soon.

In Quake you could hit the ` (back quote) key, or maybe it was ~, and
a terminal window would shoot down from the top of the screen, and
take up about half the screen. You could use it to enter cheat codes,
configure server options, etc.

Yakuake works the same way. It responds to F12 by default, but I
changed it to `.

It slides down from the top of the screen, as an always on top window.
If I hit ` again, it just slides back up. When it's up, you can't see
it. In XGL it was visible on all four sides of the cube at once (when
rolled down)

Indeed. In all seriousness though I've heard this a lot of times, from a
number of senior Python personalities (not Guido though).

I can't help but wonder if it hurts Python in the long wrong, because it
makes it harder for people to play if they are in strange and unusual

Whereas your thumbnails take up 30MB, mine take up even less than that

purpose of helping someone to whom I gave an old computer with limited
hard drive space, onto which I'd preloaded Fedora Core 3. She uploads a
lot of photos to the computer and has, I discovered, over five thousand
thumbnails in the two relevant directories, most of which must relate to
photos that have since been deleted or moved to cd anyway.

As you said earlier, the reason why the original command didn't work for
me wasn't that there was anything wrong with it.

Instead, I now realise that I'd simply accessed all of my thumbnails in
the last week. I did run a virus scan during that time and now suspect
that it was that process which led to the thumbnails being accessed
within the meaning of the atime option in find. If it wasn't that
process, then it was, as you suggested, my browsing the .thumbnails
directory yesterday for the purpose of this very exercise.

Thank you again for your help.

To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Hi,Last year I dropped in to your SLUG meet just to remind your membersthat RuxCon was on as we were setting up at UTS the night befor. A lot
of them were VERY unhappy as they hadnt heard that it was on at all thatyear and had made other plansI couldnt make it to your meet last week and I didnt want to spam yourmailing list so I was hoping one of you would pass the info on to your
mailing list.RuxCon is on the long weekend again on the 30th Sep/1st Oct at UTSIve attached some info at the end of this email and more is on the websiteAlso there are still places open for more presentations if anyone is
interestedThanks for any help with this :)Dave---RuxCon is on again in Sydney Australia.  RuxCon is an IT SecurityConference run by members of the IT Security industry.  Due to the
diverse backgrounds and interests of RuxCon staff, the conference boastsa broad range of technical and non technical topis such as reverseengineering, identity crime, cryptography, code analysis, computerforensics and social engineering techniques.
The conference, held over two days (30 09 06 and 01 10 06) at theUniversity of Technology, Sydney provides for attendees of allbackgrounds to enjoy themselves whilst expanding their awareness ofcomputer security.
RuxCon is comparable to its more famous American counterpart, the DEFCONconference. RuxCon, however provides a unique Australian flavour and achance to 'rux' it up with the many animated characters that make up the
fabric of the colourful Australian security community.RuxCon is not just about presentations, there are many activities onoffer to keep the attendees interested. Activities range from the lighthearted chilli eating competition and computer trivia quiz, right up to
the competitive Capture the Flag tournament.  Capture the Flag involvesplayers "hacking" into machines specifically setup by RuxCon organisers.$60 will cover you for two days worth of talks and experience, making it
accessible to anyone who is genuinely interested in computer security.More information is available on our website and RuxCon staff andpresenters are always available for questions or interviews. They can be

If your using a linux box with X you should be able to run the executable if you install wine and recover the ISO off the hard disk after it has installed.Alternatively you could use "cabextract" [1] which extracts both regular .cab files and executable cab files and if it is an installsheild installer you could use "unshield"[2].

Subject: Mass nominations

Hi all,

Given the nominations thus far don't fill the positions, here goes :)

I nominate Mohammad Kaan for Secretary of SLUG. He is a great person,
FLOSS
advocate, and I think he'd make a fantastic secretary and addition to
the
SLUG committee.

I nominate Silvia Pfieffer for Vice-President of SLUG - she rocks,
what else do we need to say :)

I nominate Grant Parnell for Secretary of SLUG - I believe he would make
a
great secretary for the organisation.

I nominate Robert Collins for Ordinary Committee Member of SLUG. He is a
good community member and has contributed to the SLUG committee before.

I nominate James Dumay for Ordinary Committee member of SLUG. He is fun
and
enthusiastic, so I think he'd bring this to SLUG activities :)

Lastly, I nominate Jamie Honan for ordinary committee member. For those
who
don't know Jamie, he is a previous SLUG President, a fantastic guy, a
great
person to bounce ideas off and I think if he can be convinced to go on
the
committee again he'd be great! :)

All nominees cc'd.

Cheers,
Pia

[SLUG] Need assortment of Apple Power PC s

2003-02-05 Thread James Dumay
If anyone has any old power pc macs they could donate to my little
project, that would be awsome - different types to show veritility
(spell) in my idea to the edu people...

So if you have any old macs you do not wish to keep or can give away,
email me or give me a ring on 0413259448

Peace, Love and Linux

Dose anyone have any links to the "linux edu conf" ? anybody involved in

Just wondering, becouse I have been discussing with slug members about

and showing this at the conf

Anybody? Feel free to email me if you know about it or are interested in
this little project.
