[SLUG] 2 problems with Mandrake 9.1

2003-08-24 Thread Jeff Ai
I've used RedHat 8.0 for quite a well with no problem.
Yesterday my mate lent me a copy of Mandrake 9.1 and i
decided to install it on my machine. All went well,
easy installation and configuration (maybe too easy),
then i found 2 major problem (so far)
1. I can't use internet. I use a normal dial up
server. i could make the connection, and DNS entried
are updated in the resolv.conf but seems Mandrake
still can't get names resolved. I can't even ping the
DNS server.

2. My pc won't shut down. it will just hang at the
"Power Down" point. I clicked the "Halt" button last
nite b4 i went to bed and this morning the PC is still
on.

any one here has any clue?

thanks

[SLUG] possible motherboard problem? intel BLKD865PERRL

2003-09-23 Thread Jeff Ai
I upgraded my PC recently from a Piii 600Mhz to Piv2.8Ghz. the mother board i am using now is an intel BLKD865PERRL. It has audio integrated. Fear that this may not work with RedHat 9.0 i disabled the audio on the motherboard. and had my old (and worked) PCI sound card installed. I also used my old hard disk (so that i don't have to reinstall RH9 again). All worked fine, except that now my machine doesn't have sound anymore. The "Soundcard Detection" tool found the right sound card, but it failed to play the sound sample. Also xmms freezed whenever i try to open an audio file.I think this problem's got something to do with my new motherboard. searched on the internet but didn't get any useful information. have you guys encountered such problem? and how did you guys get around it?thanks a lotJ Ai

Re: [SLUG] clamdscan failing

2004-04-29 Thread Jeff Ai
1. i am not sure about qmail-queue-scanner.pl so don't know your problem
here. but if you want to scan all you incoming email, there is a mail
scanner called amavis, it can use clamdscan as the anti-virus engine.

2. maybe you want to check your /etc/clamd.conf file and change the user
from clamav to root.

Sluggers,

just wondering if anyone can help out with a clamdscan problem. I'm
using clamscan to scan incomming e-mails under qmail-queue-scanner.pl
and it's all working fine detecting virii etc except for the fact that
it takes around 2 secs to do the scan. So I wanted to use clamdscan
(the front end to clamd) but it fails with this error

  Can't access the file ERROR

If I run it on the command line

   #> clamdscan msg.pif
   /root/msg.pif Can't access the file ERROR
(yes the file exists with 744 permissions)

Ok, so I appear to have some sort of permission problem but I can't
figure it out, same error occurs in all directories and with non-root
users.

any cluesticks? (Fedora core btw)

[SLUG] Top and hyperthreading.

2004-08-25 Thread Jeff Ai
Hi guys,
 Recently i upgraded from FC1 to FC2. My machine's got a P4 2.8 HT,
kernel is 2.6.8-1.521smp , lilo.conf has acpismp=force.

i found something quite strange.
1. cat /proc/cupinfo shows there are 2 CPUs, which is what i expected.
2. top shows only CPU. I remember with FC1 2.4.*smp kernel, i could see
2 CPUs in "top".
3. I am not noticing a dramatic change in performance, so i am not sure
if HT is actually working on my machine.

is there anything missing?

[SLUG] RedHat 7.2 network installation problem

2002-01-12 Thread Jeff Ai

hello guys, i am having a problem installing RedHat
7.2 using a PCMCIA network card (D-Link DFE660) on a
Compaq Armada laptop.
I have a linux desktop set up as a DHCP server and ftp
server (Mandrake 8.1)
I made the pcmcia boot disk and pcmcia driver disk.
boot from the disk is ok, so is the driver. Linux
detected my d-link card ok and asked me to config the
TCP/IP.
I selected using DHCP and from the syslog on the DHCP
server i can see that an IP has been assigned to the
laptop. However, the laptop did not give me any error
message nor did it allow me to select the network
installation methods (FTP, HTTP or NFS).
If i configure the TCP/IP using static
IP(192.168.0.250, MASK 255.255.255.0 no gateway, no
DNS), then choose install from FTP, it gives me that
error that could not connect the FTP server
(192.168.0.103 no message in the syslog off course). I
think those two machines are not networked.

do you guys have any idea what is going on here?

thanks a lot

[SLUG] Fwd: FYI: RedHat 7.3 probably has bugs with Real-time scheduler

2002-07-17 Thread Jeff Ai

 Note: forwarded message attached.

--- Begin Message ---

Hi, everybody

I found that RedHat 7.3 probably have bugs with Real-time scheduler.
I have run test programs to assess priority inversion of TAO on both Windows
2000 and Redhat Linux. Results from Win2000 are good but the problem
bothering me last two days is that the real-time priority of a thread in
RedHat 7.3 seems not to work and the higher priority task do not have
significant precedence over the lower ones. I could not identify where the
problem was until this evening I use a process monitoring tool called qps
that can change the scheduling policies and priorities at run-time. It is
revealed that changes to the real-time priority have little impact on
behavior of real-time threads. In contrast, changes to dynamic priorities of
threads in time-sharing scheduling class with "nice" have much more
noticeable effect
on the CPU time allocation among threads. I suspect that something is wrong
with the scheduler. So I run the exactly the same test programs on another
RedHat 7.0 machine in SEDAL lab. The results are perfect
and consist with other researchers' results regarding real-time support of
COTS operating systems.

My RedHat 7.3 is 6 CD with the red cover installation manual, which is
distributed by RedHat directly rather that intermediate re-copiers

[SLUG] samba question.

2001-07-03 Thread Jeff Ai
Title: samba question.

Hi guys, i am trying to set up a samba server on a new Solaris box (the first non-win system in this company), made the smb.conf file like this:

[global]

    workgroup = EMERALD

    server string = SAMBA

    security = SHARE  # i haven't set up all the accounts. so currently use SHARE

    password level = 8

    read prediction = Yes

    character set = ISO8859-1

    os level = 65

    preferred master = Yes

    domain master = Yes

    wins support = Yes

    locking = No

[temp]

    path = /tmp

    writeable = Yes

    guest ok = Yes

    locking = Yes

[SPACE]

    path = /space

    guest ok = Yes

    locking = Yes

The /space directory contains some files i'd like to be shared by everyone in the workgroup(as guest).

While they can access /tmp without problem, they can't access the /space from Windows Explorer. It says "\\Unix\space is not accessable. The network name cannot be found"

The permission of the /space is set as:

drw-rw-rw-  11 root root 512 Jul  3 16:20 space

Did i do anything wrong?

Thanks for you help in advance.

Jeff

No execute (x) bit set on the directory.  Add the bit and try accessing it

as the 'guest user' (nobody?) from the unix CLI.  When you can access it

with that user, try again with samba.

Greeno

PS: man chmod for info on permissions and the execute bit
