[SLUG] ESS688 soundcard hassles

2001-06-03 Thread Julian Pringle

Warning: I'm new to Linux.
Am trying to install an ESS688 soundcard on RedHat7.1
Settings for w*s were
I/O port: 220
IRQ: 10
DMA: 1
sndconfig doesn't accept these settings and the redhat FAQ's go over my head.
Have googled etc but would appreciate any pointers to other help files,
advice etc.
Most of the google pages re ESS were in French or Russian :(

TIA

[SLUG] X configuration?

2001-02-17 Thread Julian Pringle

I'm in the early stages of escaping from W*s and having
some probs with screen display (particularly with
Star Office) and am unconfident about my X config. Monitor
is a 14" KTX CAD-135. XF86Config entries are:

Monitor section:

Identifier "My Monitor"
Vendor name "Unknown"
Model name "Unknown"
HorizSync 31.5
VertRefresh 50-70

Graphics device section

Identifier "S3 Inc.|86c368 [Trio 3D/2X]"
VendorName "Unknown"
BoardName "Unknown"
ChipID 0x8a10
VideoRam 4096
#Insert clocks here if appropriate

Am I on the right track? Any advice appreciated.

TIA

Julian Pringle

I think that there is great scope for a newbies list.

As a Newbie I worry that this will leave us playing in the shallow end of the pool for
ever. It's like learning any foreign language - the more you read the more you absorb
(even if you don't understand the questions at first, let alone the answers). Hunting
the archives for an answer you often learn other stuff along the way.

Let us hang in and read and learn, and forgive us the odd dopey question. The blind
never did lead the blind very far.
