[SLUG] Ubuntu vs Novell Desktop- a real life corporate experience

2006-04-03 Thread Linley Caetan
Whilst enjoying the expo I came across some corporate types at the
Novell stand. Very Friendly and handed me an evaluation version of their
Suse Desktop.

I've recently taken on a sales role and our team use Exchange to
interact. Email, calendars, tasks. I've been itching to go to an open
source desktop for all the group ware stuff.
I was intially going to go with Ubuntu but being an open minded chap I
set aside my cynicism of the corporate world and decided to give the
Novell a go.
After all they are supporting Ximian and Linux (Suse) so I decided to
give It a go.
Unfortunately the experience was less than satisfactory.
In fact it has to be the clunkiest install short of any OS from Microsoft.
3 Cds for a distribution meant for a corporate environment that will in
most cases have a fast reliable connection.
Round 1 to the well Dapper Drake in the one piece suit.
The duck flew rings around the lizard by ( I suspect) installing a bare
minimum and then latching on to my T1 connection and grabbing the rest.
Nicely done. half an hour from go to whoa, compared to 90 minutes for
for the lizard.

Now, after weathering the long installation from Novell I move to
connect to Exchange server.
Remember that a huge part of Novell's client base will be wanting this
to just work out of the box.
No dice!
The connector Plugin is not installed by default. Look around for CD2
after accidentally inserting CD 1 (repositories are not set up except
for the CD repos) and install the plugin.
20 minutes later give up in disgust. This version is six months old so
the forums are no help and I cant be bothered hunting down yast or yum
or whatever bastard repos' are needed.
One mornings work up in smoke. Had enough so I wearily fire up windows
for the day.
Next morning I send in my fine feathered friend.
He has the lizard for breakfast and after 40 minutes I am reading an
email from a client whose business we have won.
Thanks Dapper. What a guy!
Lessons.
I am sure that the current release of Novell linux is probably much
better than the one I tried, but even if it is, a quick check of their
website still shows a bloated 3 CD set of ISOs.
But the packaging was beautiful. Being in the printing game I recognised
that a lot of time and effort and money had gone into the packaging of
the CDs. I recognised that the whole thing would have had to be locked
down months ago and to be economical they are making large batches for
use over six months worth of events.
So Novell, less money spent on packaging more on making a lightweight
distro that gets prospective clients moving quickly.
Declarations.
I have been a Ubuntu user since that hoary hedgehog so that may have
given me a jaundiced view of the install comparison. But I have never
used Evolution except for brief evaluations.

Re: [SLUG] Linux Installation Problems - Please Help

2006-03-17 Thread Linley Caetan
snip

Ditch Red Hat. Too many things about the distro are specialised to be Red Hat
only - the knowledge doesn't transfer. Back patching kernels is especially a
lock-in to Red Hat. When you are more of a Linux mechanic, you can try again
if you like. But you won't get there without a working Linux install.

And if it worked for you, it would be great. But it doesn't. Try Knoppix or
Ubuntu (I use and recommend Kubuntu - which is Ubuntu with a default KDE
desktop).

Regards,
Bret

After trying RH 7 and FC2,3,4 I finally gave up on redhat/Fedora.
Yum seemed to solve some problems but in the end the whole thing sucked.
I now use Ubuntu and have not looked back.
My only outstanding problem is to get 5.1 surround sound working
properly on my cmi8738( no subwoofer channel for some reason).
So Ubuntu or Kubuntu it is and I recommend Automatix for newbies to get
them moving with a whole raft of applications.

For ADSL I would strongly recommend that you install a dhcp router - get a wireless one so you can connect wireless devices later.Let the router manage the connection to the internet and then you will have an easier life.I recommend Dlink( keep away from netgear!)for under $100.00 you will get things moving. Just plug into the ethernet port of the router and configure it with a web browser (windows or linux or mac).

I now do Firefox with Ie6 for the redirect page. Then you must switch

Upgrade your module-init-tools.
Additional check to do:
1. check your file /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.
There should be a line that says,
- upgraded to 2.6.x
Missing!
The equivalent file in fc1 is different.
This means?

Did you upgrade from Fedora Core 1 ?
Let us do this once more by modifying your 'Makefile' as follows:
1. Change directory to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] linux-2.6.5-1.358]#
2. Then,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] linux-2.6.5-1.358]# vi Makefile
and change the fourth line, that says,
EXTRAVERSION=-1.358custom
to
EXTRAVERSION=-1.358-lcaetan
The idea here is to make a new name for your kernel so as
to avoid overwriting your old one.
3. Then do the following line by line instead of all commands
in one line.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] linux-2.6.5-1.358]# make oldconfig
[EMAIL PROTECTED] linux-2.6.5-1.358]# make clean
[EMAIL PROTECTED] linux-2.6.5-1.358]# make
[EMAIL PROTECTED] linux-2.6.5-1.358]# make modules
[EMAIL PROTECTED] linux-2.6.5-1.358]# make modules_install
[EMAIL PROTECTED] linux-2.6.5-1.358]# make install
If successfull you should be able to use your new kernel.
thanks again Oscar , looks like I got a bit further, made it to : make
install_modules with this error:
INSTALL drivers/media/video/zr36067.ko
if [ -r System.map ]; then /sbin/depmod -ae -F System.map
2.6.5-1.358-lcaetan; fi
make: *** [_modinst_post] Error 143

Sorry, Fire fox and Just about all browsers work on OS 10.x .
For linux the only sure fire solution is User agent spoofing.
Best way that I have found is prefbar find it at
http://prefbar.mozdev.org/ .
Install and restart your browser. A preferences bar appears with some
check boxes and a drop down menu.
Select "Moz 1.0 win98" then log into St George Bank.
Now just lay back and think of the economy.

Do by booting with Fedora CD with 'linux rescue'.

Oscars hint got me part way there.
To get the file to work correctly I editied it with...
the authconfig command. and set all items to blank
That worked!

Has anyone with fedora core solved this or have an alternative real

Check out Compiere [http://www.compiere.org]. It's supposed to be
good. Open Source, written in Java. Performance wise, the word is it's
supposed to run rings around the likes of PeopleSoft. But I don't have
the time to play around in the ERP/CRM space anymore, so I haven't
loaded it. I had heard of least one ERP consultant
implementing/extending it in Australia, based in Melbourne.

The biggest problem with it is the requirement of an Oracle backend.
This is supposed to be rectified through some database independence
work, but I'm not sure how that's progressing. The site's forums look
the best place to get good information. See also:

At work, the sales guys are pushing to replace ACT! with MS CRM. It

Exchange2000/2003 and it's own Win2000/2003 server running IIS, all
in the same AD.

Not open source but I have used salesforce.com which is a no software

all run over the internet and with good interoperability with your backend.

Works well but the interface is crude compared to aqua (no anti aliasing
