great thing about using the open source firmwares out there like dd-wrt
and OpenWRT is that you can turn your router into anything you want -
router, access point, wireless ethernet bridge, making it a very

I presume there would need to be some kind of compatible account with a telco?

Hello sluggers, I've moved an Apache intranet I run on my home office
from an ext3 to a vfat partition. I did this by copying the

returns "You don't have permission to access /bookmarks.htm on this
server" to the browser.
I don't have this problem if I copy the webserver directory to
another ext3 partition - seemingly proving that I'm changing the
necessary conf info.
So - is there something different about ext and vfat security,
necessitating some more sophisticated directory copy process ?

Surely there would be permissions problems as vfat does not have the
ownership or permissions that unix files do.
What happens if as root you su to whatever user apache runs as and
then try to read the vfat files? If you find that apache cant read the
files then you have found the error. If it can read them then look at
the conf file again maybe.

Mike

I believe it would depend on the permissions set when mounting the vfat
partition. You would need specify extra options for who gets read/write
access in fstab I think...

Fil

Fil is correct. If you HAD to use a VFAT partition to store web files
for Apache, then you could ensure appropriate permissions are set for
files on that VFAT partition by adding options at the end of your
mounting statement in /etc/fstab:

/dev/hdb1 /mnt/data vfatdefaults,umask=002,uid=500,gid=100 0 0
The uid and gid specify the user and group ownerships and the umask sets
the octal permissions of files on that partition

Wondering if anyone can recommend a streaming media server for Linux.
Needs to be able to serve in Windows Media format as well as for other

Been searching through freshmeat and SourceForge with little luck.
You could also try http://helixcommunity.org/. The open source version
of helix Server will play REAL streaming protocols, but if you wanted to
stream quicktime and Windows Media, you have to buy the commercial
version :(.

I've been running the commericial version of Helix Server on Linux for a
client of mine - Very easy to set up and run.

All help appreciated...

Thanks for the tip. It works like a charm so now myself and the other

thanks to everyone who has contributed to this discussion thread,

This is either because the second user is not in the audio group or because
the first user has already opened the device, and the hardware only supports
a single writer.

- Digital Camera - When I plugged my digital camera in and tried to
download my photos using gtkam, I was unable to "connect" to the camera
in the second user's session but I was able to successfully connect
using gtkam in the first user' session

Almost certainly also a group issue.
- Jeff
You seem to have nailed it on the head. It is a permissions issue,
though it keeps manifesting itself whenever a user logs out and back in
again - somehow during the login process, the device has its ownership
and permissions reset to 600.

I'm going to do some further poking around to see what I can see...

Choose which desktop you wish to own with and continue.
The screen-saver even obeys the rules of the visible desktop, while the
invisible DT is ignored. We do, and have for years, run with 4 desktops.
This is how it does work, not a theory of how it may or may not work.

The advantage of using gdmflexiserver is that it is dynamic (only invoke new
X servers and greeters when required) and it integrates nicely into things
like xscreensaver's locking functionality. You can set up multiple X servers
manually, sure, but that's much further away from what XP has, and 'normal'
users won't be looking to set things up like that.

The beast is dead! but I still don't agree:
For me: user c and d don't know, and don't want to know computer stuff.
They do F3 and F4 and each has their familiar world:
login, use, exit etc
User a runs his session, starts other sessions on F5, F6 etc as
required, can relinquish the console for a cuppa while b, c or d check
mail and can continue at his lesuire.
I contend that F3 is simpler than any mouse-menu-option.
This is a way, if you like it, use it, if you don't ditch it. Even more
so as c, d use kde, and gnome, a and b use icewm.
James

James and Jeff - Thankyou very much for your responses. I've tried both
suggestions and they both work fine. Pressing is a hell
of a lot easier than having to log out of one account and logging into
the other!

One thing I have noticed is that the second account (i.e. the user who
logs in after the first user) seems to have trouble with the following:
- Audio Device - Gnome says that there is no audio device on the second
user whereas it is working fine one the desktop/session of the first user
- Digital Camera - When I plugged my digital camera in and tried to
download my photos using gtkam, I was unable to "connect" to the camera
in the second user's session but I was able to successfully connect
using gtkam in the first user' session

Its almost as if the first user/session is "capturing" those items
rendering them unable to be used by subsequent sessions?

Any suggestions would be appreciated

[SLUG] Two concurrent Gnome Desktops?

2005-02-03 Thread Shaun Butler
Greetings SLUG List
My home PC runs Fedora Core 1 with the Gnome Desktop. My wife and I have
separate user accounts so we can both log in and use our own mail
clients, have our own desktop settings etc. The one thing that I am sick
of is having to log out of each others' accounts and then log into our
own to read email etc.

Windows XP has functionality which enables you to switch between users
quickly. Is there a way in linux to be able to switch users quickly
without logging off one user and then logging onto the other?
