[SLUG] mandrake 9.1 cdrom and sound

2003-07-06 Thread Wayne Crich

This sounds like two dumb questions. After years of using RedHat i
have set a machine up with mandrake.

  Two simple problems:

  1) No sound - Yet card is configured correctly and volume is set
  above 0.

  2) Cd drives cannot be read from. They are there and mounted but
  appear locked in KDE browser.

  Any help would be appreciated

  Thank You

  Wayne

Re: [SLUG] XP dual boot debacle

2003-01-21 Thread Wayne Crich
Danny,
When I did this I did it the other way around. Put Xp on first. Create an
empty partition (fat32 is best) then install redhat to the empty partition. I
used partition magic as it does resize ntfs partitions non destructively. Then using
you favourite boot manager it should all work. With any version of NT I
have found it wants to be the only OS so put it on first.

[SLUG] weird samba problem

2002-04-23 Thread Wayne Crich

I'm installing a second samba server on my home network using RH7.1.
Installed and configured samba fine.
It appears in windows network neibhorhood but will not allow access.
The error message is " samba is not accessible the computer or share name could not be
found"
Yes one server is master.
Yes windows users are linux users with same password.
Yes windows encrypted passwords is off.
Yes smbd and nmbd are running.
Yes smbstatus reports exactly as expected.
I am at a loss my other 7.1 samba server works fine with everything but hthe master
browser option the same.

Thanks Wayne

Re: [SLUG] [Fwd: [Lias] Latest Microsoft Stupidity]

2002-04-18 Thread Wayne Crich

It does seem they are implying that somehow this would break the law. Certainly it
does not apply in Australia where the system belongs to the owner and they may
remove and replace one os with another provided the software was legally obtained.
Unless Microsoft has an exclusive contract with the manufacturer they would
never know what OS was originally on the machine in any country anywhere. In NSW
schools our software agreement with MS covers OS on any machine in the
school or in staff homes.

Its just more MS lunacy, designed to intimidate end users

[SLUG] X problem on optima laptop

2001-07-06 Thread Wayne Crich

I have just got a new optima a 1000 laptop. Naturally I thought it
needed Linux. I installed RH7-1 no problem. When I start x i get four
quadrants of the screen with a large black cross in the middle.
Everything works except I can't see it. If I run Xconfigurator it
detects an SiS 630 with the XF86_svga server and then tells me I have a
segmentation fault. I have no idea what monitor values to enter in
xf86config or what else to do.
Can anyone help ?

If I run

[SLUG] eth0 card problem

2001-06-15 Thread Wayne Crich

I've set up my first Linux only box at home. Redhat 7., kde the works.
It's great and it has helped in getting a handle on Linux as a desktop
machine. I boot this morning at the message comes up that either IRQ or
io ports are incoreect for eth0 so no network.

It worked on installation and I got onto the network last weekend,
howcome when I boot this morning this error comes up ?

How do I work out the settings on the card (no windows which has always
helped in the past on other machines). Its a plain ne2000 clone ?

Apart from another total install from scratch how can I get the card
working again ?

Thanks
Wayne
