Re: [SLUG] Getting the correct time on Raspberry-Pi
I sorted it out in the end, the command needed was dpkg-reconfigure tzdata and that did something internally that made it work. Maybe, or you could just copy /etc/localtime across from just about any other machine. [SLUG] weird CGI problem
Hi, I've been working on cgi-bin/A.pl at a website. A particular form in A.pl used to activate B.pl but had to be changed to A.pl Mysteriously, as soon as this change was made (with nothing else being changed), the resulting invocation of A.pl by itself results in A.pl being downloaded rather than executed. Hi, How do you keep a few servers identical for the purposes of backup and reliability? I don't mean RAID, which is within single servers, but between servers not necessarily at the same site. [SLUG] reading ancient floppies ...
Hi, I've been given some floppies which are apparently Amiga/Commodore. According to one www reference I found, it's easy to read them. You just dd if=/dev/fd0a of=myfile.adf and get 880k bytes of ADF. However, I don't have /dev/fd0a. Have you seen one? - what are its major and minor numbers, please, and what kernel are you running? Another web site reckes I should try fdutils. I did, but the results suggest that I need non-PC hardware. Can anyone advise, please? [SLUG] pentium 200 and motherboard need a home
Hi, I've got a working P200 and motherboard to get rid of. (If you'd also like the numberplate MMX-200, it parks outside a school near my place and you should be able to find the owner easily). The motherboard has two problems: (a) the battery is flat and it's built into the clock chip and I've been told it can't be replaced (b) one of the hooks on the first DIMM slot has detached. Problem (b) can be overcome by using 72-pin SIMMs but they cost $2/megabyte. I can supply some if you need them. I don't know who made the board but it's marked 9650-8. It has 3.5 PCI and 2.5 ISA sockets. If you can't pick it up, I can bring it to the next SLUG meeting. [SLUG] GeForce 256 video card
Hi, I've been offered a 2nd hand card ($100) which is supposed to be 32MB nVidia FeForce 256. Well, nVidia make chips but apparently not cards. The card looks generally like the LeadTek card shown at http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/00q1/000107/ except that (a) it hasn't got the 2nd video output (b) it hasn't got all the jumpers (c) the 4 fat chips sitting next to the CPU are 8 skinny chips on mine, with another 8 on the back (d) there's no white WinFast sticker on mine (e) there are other minor absences on mine In particular, there's no LeadTek logo on my card (but nor is there in the picture). Does anyone know, please, what my card is? What kernel version(s) are drivers available for, please? [SLUG] problem with striping
Hi, I tried to install RH7.2 on a new box with an Intel motherboard and an Adaptec AIC-7899 scsi card. It is configured as follows: hda: CD-ROM hdb: hdc: hdd: hde, hdf and hdg: striped on 3 drives plugged into the scsi card. For some reason, RH put /boot on hdg1. It works fine once booted but you can only boot it by floppy and even then you must i. Tell it to ignore one of the stripes being off-line ii. Tell it to ignore the booting order each time you boot. So I must have damaged a boot sector somewhere. Has anyone met this before, please? What did you do. [SLUG] yet another ppp question ....
Hi, I've been asked to get diald working, as mentioned last week. It needs to dial an ISP who starts ppp spontaneously about 2 seconds after your password goes in (please don't debate that point, as I've gone in with minicom and that's what happens). I've been able to get in with wvdial, which has kindly set up the password in both /etc/ppp/pap-secrets and chap-secrets. However, I can't seem to get diald up. What happens is that it dials and handshakes and dies leaving the message: Peer is not authorised to use remote address 198.142.213.254 which is presumably the P-t-P address that ppp0 was going to get. What's wrong, please? How do I fix it? Jim Donovan -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://lists.slug.org.au/listinfo/slug

[SLUG] squashed faxes
Hi, I have been experimenting with efax (driven by fax) to send PS files as faxes. The command fax make converts PS to a G3 (TIFF) file quite acceptably. However, on the receiving machine, the top few lines were squashed to a fraction of their proper height. Is this a physical problem with the tractors in the receiving machine? Or is it a due to fax adding a bit of header stuff to the page and taking liberties with my PS because it needed that space for its header? Regards, Jim Donovan postscript (no pun intended) I didn't use sendfax because it alleged my modem wasn't class 2, whatever that is. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://slug.org.au/lists/listinfo/slug

[SLUG] decrypting MSWord8 files
Hi, I've been sent a file which the owner wants me to be able to read. Why he mightn't want me to write on my own copy is not clear. However, when I try to open it, Word asks me for a password. Presumably it is encrypted - at any rate strings(1) returns garbage. I understand that software exists to decrypt these things quickly. Can anyone point me at some, please?
