[SLUG] Asus Eee PC 900

2009-09-11 Thread lesl...@ozemail.com.au
A friend who had one of the above, but thought it unsuitable, gave it to me. I
find it very suitable for certain things and want to continue using it. However,
it came with Windows XP and I'd prefer to run Linux on it. At the same time, I
don't want to wipe XP and then find the computer doesn't work properly with
Linux. I solved that problem on a laptop I use by using Wubi to install Ubuntu.
I
looked for a way to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix on the Eee by using Wubi, but
there doesn't seem to be one.

Are people running versions of Linux on this or similar computers that they've
been able to install easily while keeping Windows?

Thank for reading this,

Leslie.

[SLUG] Dell Latitude 2100

2009-05-19 Thread lesl...@ozemail.com.au
Someone posted something about the above. I went looking to see what I could
find
about it from Dell itself and found this:
http://en.community.dell.com/blogs/direct2dell/archive/2009/05/18/latitude-2100-dell-netbook-for-schools.aspx

Among other things, I noticed that the version of Ubuntu being offered is 8.10.

[SLUG] Missing desktop icons

2009-05-06 Thread lesl...@ozemail.com.au
I upgraded from v 8.04 of Ubuntu to v 8.10. When I did, my desktop icons
disappeared. I found others complaining of a similar problem in an inconclusive
bug report. It seemed that useful information could be found in the
.xsessions-errors file. I renamed my existing one and rebooted. The new file
said
this:

/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...

That's all quite beyond me. It seems as though I have a number of errors, though
which, if any of them, relate to my missing desktop icons I don't know.

Can anyone suggest any steps I should try in light of the above file to get my
desktop icons back?

Thanks for reading this,

Leslie
