[SLUG] domain name registration

2005-08-24 Thread luke
Hi.

I've registered a '.info' domain name with registerfly.com for about $AUD5.00.
It all works but it takes about 5 seconds to do a lookup.

Can anyone recommend a domain registration service that has fast response times
and does cheap '.info' domains?

I'm sure this has been asked before but can you please recommend a service that
does the above.

Thanks.
Kind regards.
Luke.

Although anchor is a tad expensive as compared to other registars.

Anchor is competitive on .au, but yes, GTLDs are a little pricey.

This site:

http://whatsinaname.com.au/

is out of date but helpful; most of those registrars do GTLD as well
as .au. Anchor in particular have .com.au domains $30 cheaper than
what's listed there, so do take it with the requisite quantity of salt.

[SLUG] domain name registration

2004-08-31 Thread Luke (Terry) Vanderfluit
Hi,

I want to register a domain name on the cheap.
Does anyone have recommendations?
I looked at domaindirect.com who have a product called 'domain parking'.
Has anyone used this? Are there any catches?

TIA,
Luke

I used DomainDirect for years and found them OK to deal with. I've stopped
using them only because I wanted all my domains consolidated in one place
for convenience. I don't think they are the cheapest though.

.au or generics? I use namescout.com for .au's, because they're the
cheapest (but beware the spam they send out every now and then). I'd highly
recommend GoDaddy.com for your gTLD domains -- they're cheap as and have
good service and a solid anti-spam policy (both for themselves and the
domains they register -- spam for a godaddy-registrared domain and you won't
have the domain much longer).

I register all my domains at http://www.cheapdomain.com.au which seems
to be a subsidurary of iPrimus.

Its now AU$16.50 a year for a .com, .net, .org type domain (used to be
$14.95). Then I host all my domains over at http://nerdie.org, which is
a free dns hosting site. You can set A, CNAME and MX records and also
mail and url redirection.

Depends on what TLD you want to register in.

I'd recommend Anchor: http://anchor.com.au for gTLD and .au domain names,
but that's because I'm biased.

RE: [SLUG] Domain Name Registration

2001-10-24 Thread George Vieira

Yes you do need a name to register the domain.. doesn't have to be a company
(P/L), just a business.
NetRegistry probably go through melbourneIT.. so they probably add their bit
on.. just get the best price.

Process takes 2 hours or 2 days.. depending how much you want to pay.. 2
days is around $140 I think.. it's been a while.. $300 for 2 hours..

Subject: [SLUG] Domain Name Registration

Hi everyone,

I have recently been interested in registering
a domain name for myself. I am guessing that
this SLUG list has a pretty large group of people
who know the ins and outs of domain registration
so I was hoping I could get some experienced
information.

Firstly, I want it to be a .com.au domain name.
Does this mean I HAVE TO register a business
name with the words I want in my domain name ?

So if I want to register joespizza.com.au I
need to own a business name Joes Pizza Pty Ltd ?

Is this the only way to do it ?

Secondly, where should I go to do this at the
best price ? Can you guys please distinguish
the difference between NetRegistry.com.au,
MelbourneIT.com.au and inww.com ? Who should
I go to, are the prices fixed ?

Thirdly, how long does the process take ?

Thanks very much guys, any extra advice will
appreciated. I'm sure some of you know some
tricks that will speed up the process and/or
make it easier.

Thanks again ! :)

MelbIT is INWW (Internet Names Worldwide), and has exclusive rights to the
sale of .com.au domain registrations worldwide. Shop around. If you buy it
off anyone else, they're only a reseller for MelbIT.

Re: [SLUG] Domain Name Registration

You *really* want to pay C$140 for a 2 year .com.au or would you prefer to
pay C1/3 (even allowing for US$/A$ conversion) of that for a 3 year (or up
to 10 year) .com domain

If you want to hold off for a short while the prices should plummet for
.com.au when competition kicks in.

I'm not so in love with the .com system. In order to protect one of my
names I've had to register 12 variations (with trailing s, with hyphen,
.org, .com, .net etc.), despite having registered a US trade mark to
protect myself! The net cost is much more than the australian status
quo.

I host a site which is .com ... but someone has registered a variation of
his name by simply removing a hyphen and now uses that domain name to host
 porn.

I can't see the open slather .com system as being such a great idea unless
you are running a registry. They must have made a mozza from .info and
.biz

Sorry about the off-topic.

Re: [SLUG] Domain Name Registration

2001-10-24 Thread Adam Kennedy

Melbourne IT will get you where you want to go directly.

NetRegistry and the rest provide a layer of friendlyness and advice ( which
your getting from the list ) that you probably don't need.
They also tend to mainly do bundling, they are in it to sell you hosting,
email, e-commerce etc more than the actual domain itself.

Using one of these other companies is like buying a computer from a Name
Brand computer company. Great if you don't know what your doing and need
help, but a waste of money if you have knowlegable friends ( like us ).

Let me just note in their favour, that NetRegistry ( I worked there, don't
know about the others ) are good value if you have a contentious name, or
you think you might get refused the domain. They fight daily battles with
Melbourne IT beurocracy, and thus they know the appeals processes inside
out, so sometimes that can get something approved that would otherwise be
denied. ( They got mthotham.com.au for example, which would normally be
rejected as a place name, by faxing Melbourne IT the 72 page government act
stating the ski company has exclusive commercial control of the entire
mthotham area ). But it you are registerring a business name specifically
to get the domain name, you should have no such troubles, as you can easily
make sure that you tailor the business name to the domain name.

One last note. Melbourne IT DO WATCH the business name register. After three
years when your business name runs out ( or however long it is now ), they
can and will send you a please explain letter asking why you should keep
the domain now that you no longer have the credentials to back it up. I have
personally seen these. Keep your business name up to date.

Adam
