I believe I read that they are providing 19.2K under this country
internet upgrade program.

"A ?technical support service? will be established to provide Internet
users with access to
Telstra technical assistance and Internet testing services to achieve
the equivalent of a
19.2 kbps line speed."

That should make a few fences sing!

56k modems rely on one less A-D conversion meaning your ISP has
to have digital lines (onramp) into a digital access server.

If your ISP has analogue lines or no digital access server
or you have a crap phone line, you'll get a max connection of
33.6k (except if it's cos you've got a crap line, then you might
get somewhere between 33.6 - about 50 odd).

Try http://www.56k.com maybe for more info.

Thats a very sus connection speed - suggests one or the other has
decided on 28800 as the max speed possible. Does either modem
have non default setup strings?

Also one of the modems may be doing a non-gracefull fallback from
V.90 to old V.34 (28k8) when the V.90 handshake fails. Have you
tried setting both modems to connect at V.34 with an upper limit of
33600? ie the AT+ms=etc etc command for rockwell modem?

Okay, two different lines will give two different speeds, although this
should not be an issue with digital ISP lines.

More than likely it could be modem incompatibility.

Certain modems, e.g. Spirit, had a reputation for not connecting
reliably- mostly because their owners invoked god-awful complex strings
instead of AT&F (factory defaults), but others were just unreliable.

I don't know what the story is with digital modems is, but in the days
of analogue modems, I always ran two different modems, because each had
different characteristics and certain modems performed better connecting
to a particular modem.

I understood that this is just SIO to modem communications speed.

Correct, 33.6k is possible. But depends on a nuymber of factors. Excuse
spelling my ssh link to mail is lagged. Infact it goes across the ocean
from states twice :(

Just was pointing out 56k was not possible if oits two machines talking to
each other

Depending on the digital rack, they usually imit the inbound bit down to
50K, for stability. It was usually recommended by the supplier of the
gear. Depends on country also :)

When I use to dial my works digital rack, I could get high 50k connects,
even with bigpond direct I could do the same.

When it came to dialing friends with same modme, we would get 33k6 most
times. Guess my lines are good :) So I should be blessed, its not likely
to hav e ADSL anytimne soon, and cable was never going to happen. So lines
are my only option :(

56K is only done when your dialing a digital modem rack that has such
sup[port.

So if your 2 systems in question are just standard 56K modems, then the
most you should get over analog lines between them is 33.6k.

[SLUG] Getting a dial in up to speed

2001-05-15 Thread Howard Lowndes

I have a Linux box with a dial in 56K modem. The dial in is being handled
by mgetty and works OK, EXCEPT that it will not connect at faster than
28K. The remote end is definitely capable of 56K.

In mgetty.config I have speed 115200 in the global section but to no
apparent avail.

What else should I be looking for?
