Thanks to everyone who replied to my query. Since the thing the maps are required for is a commercial product (currently, working on a proof of concept), there won't be any problem with paying someone for the data (although, I agree to some extent with the rationale that the data should be freely available ... it's the value add that people should be paid for).
I now have a number a number of avenues of enquiry to follow through. Maybe we'll even look into talking to the Auslig people about getting some open source libraries happening, so that people who have bought their data can at least use it on Linux !! Thanks again.
