You'd have a tough time playing hack/rogue on
a real teletype.

The answer is, I believe, adventure aka colossal cave
aka advent aka dungeon, a direct linear ancestor
of the classic text game zork.

Takes me back! I used to sneak in to the computer
labs at unsw late at night to play it on the pdp11's
using my brothers account.

Ah those were the days. Amazing how engrossed you
can get with just text on a greenscreen accompanied
by the occasional soft feep.

No rogue and hack work only on glass ttys --- they use character
graphics and the curses package to draw the maze on-screen.

If you're looking for 'Colossal Cave Adventure', try here:

(And watch out for the dwarf!)

involving a creature that you were certain was not around that corner

That sounds like 'hunt the wumpus' to me, a much simpler game.
As already posted, if you're a Debian user then they're in the
wonderful 'bsdgames' package.

Advent? Also known as Adventure or Colossal Cave. You are in a
maze of twisty little passages, all alike.

Source should be available at:

It seemed to be called various things, but I think Crystal Caverns was
what you are talking about.

Something like you are in a maze of twisty passages...

I remeber it well because as sole OP on the backup shift, I could play
it and go home late, or not play it and go home early {:-).

The other stuff, wumpus, star trek, etc came later.
