I've used RedHat 8.0 for quite a well with no problem.

Ive been using mandrake since the 7's, tried RH 9, friggin hate it :)

1. I can't use internet. I use a normal dial up
server. i could make the connection, and DNS entried
are updated in the resolv.conf but seems Mandrake
still can't get names resolved. I can't even ping the
DNS server.

I configured the internet via the GUI, I didnt hack any files and it worked. Mandrake Control Center etc

2. My pc won't shut down. it will just hang at the
"Power Down" point. I clicked the "Halt" button last
nite b4 i went to bed and this morning the PC is still
on.

Yeah known bug, found it in there bugzilla. My work around is like: log out, log back into something other than KDE (i.e. WindowMaker) log out and halt works.
<bah just read what you said>
Mandrake may not like you hardware or something, when you see the text "Power Down", its means "it is now safe to turn you pc off". You see this in debian, depends how well mandrake sync's with the ACPI (advanced power stuff- its a windows designed thing but linux has dun a good job with it.)
