[SLUG] Teeny-tiny Linux Device - Your Flight of Fancy?

2005-03-30 Thread Jeff Waugh
Wow. This is rad... and TINY. It has:

 * 10/100 ethernet or 802.11b wifi
 * Serial
 * 2MB or 4MB of Flash
 * 8MB RAM
 * Up to 55MHz ARM CPU

What would you do with a teeny-tiny Linux machine like this?

That'd make a rad WDS (wireless distributed system) node/expander thingy.

 I suppose if you added a tiny 4 bit DAC and wrote an audio driver then ran
 a copy of festival (or something more low-tech) you'd have suitable
 output at least. A few simple buttons (possibly using the same GPIO pins)
 could be wired in for a bit of input.

It's only a 55MHz cpu with limited RAM don't forget - festival isn't
going to run too well on that.

 Mind you, I don't think I'd like 802.11b right in my ear. It's microwave
 frequency after all! Any intelligence gain would be negated by frying
 brain cells.

Indeed.

Create a miniature WiFi ariel-photography platform (from a model plane or
similar).

Och, that'd be rad... But you've only got serial and wifi - how would you
handle camera control and images? (There are network+usb devices around, but
I haven't seen one this small.)

I was thinking webcam type thing streaming images to the WiFi box. Not
sure if the serial is RS232 or USB. If it's USB, you're home and
hosedRS232 OTOH could be a bit slow.

Ultimately what I'd REALLY like is stereo webcams to capture two images and
stream them back to a set of 3D goggles (or something) and fly a model from
a real pilot's-eye-perspective. Now THAT would rock! (plus would have
real-world applications for search-and-rescue, fire-spotting, military
etc).

Phwoar. That's totally doable now, with the size of webcams and teeny-tiny
Linux machines. :-)
