in what way doesn't it work?

Apr 4 13:47:26 Lancre pppd[1474]: not replacing existing default route

you probably want the default route to be out ppp0 not eth0.
ie. the problem might be routing not ppp.
(find the defaultroute option 'man pppd')

Dave.

That sounds like the problem.
delete the 'gateway' line in your /etc/network/interfaces

Well, the PPP link came up and is working fine.. :)
ping 137.111.7.4 should return ping replies.. - if not, your firewalling
might be screwy? Cheers, Damien

Thank you ...

Yes, I can ping 137.111.7.4 (or 5 as the case may be..)
and the number assigned to me.. but not the DSNs .. or any named URI.
If I use gpppon instead of pon, it works much the same just more
logging),
except the off button gives error..no ppp; and does not exit. poff
still works

Firewalling I would not know where to begin ...this REALLY beats me ..
everything seems to work..but it doesn't.

What does your /etc/resolv.conf look like? ppp may or may not overwrite that
file, depending on how it's configured.

Sorry--so I lied ... :-)

I tried again to dialup on to ISP, finding that pon has a log file.

This is part of it: does this say why it does not work?
