If by 'emacs' you mean GNU (FSF) Emacs, versions = 20 don't support
syntax highlighting in the console. Version 21 does, however.

Dear List:

Istarted emacs,
Syntax-highlightis workable well under X-windows ,but is not under text mode ,
(for both cases , Ienabled 
Help-Option-Global-font-lock-mode ) .

Istarted Xemacs under text-mode, there was a 
red-coloured sentence.
butthe function of syntax- highlight 
failed ,too.

Could someone (who use emacs as a editor) give 
some help ?
