The best application I've come up with is storage for secret keys (ssh, PGP,
etc). Stick it in the machine you're on, mount it in the right place, and
do your thang. Then you pull it out and there's no trace of your keys on
that machine anymore (well, excluding OS caching). Sure you can do this
with a floppy disk, but they're more prone to breakage, and a Memory Key
fits on your keyring.

I remember digging around for ages on ibm.com.au and found it hidden away in
a really obscure place. Trust me, it is there, and it is for sale. Google
for "usb memory key", you should be able to shoot straight into the right
place.

I would assume it needs usb storage support. This tends to be better,
the newer the kernel is, and is unavailable in the 2.2.x USB Backports.

> Any probs plugging it into Windows or Mac machines later?

So long as you have the right filesystem support, (and don't re-format
anything) it should be fine.

I guess

Actually, it appears to be $99AUD, not too bad considering a replacement
floppy drive looks like being $70US +. Plus trying to fit it!

I'm using all three (Linux ,Win and Mac), and lugging round an external
zip drive is just as much hassle. ( Imagining scene of me, on train
with zip drive and laptop perched precariously on my knee )
Being able to use it on the Mac is not as important, but it would
be very handy!

Thanks all, at least I know of one that definately works now.

For that money (US$ right?) you can buy a USB zip drive and get 100MB
per disk. For not much more you could get a whole palm-top computer.

Just phoned my brother-in-law who works at au.IBM (why don't they just call
it IBM Australia?) and he has advised the part number is 19K4513
(AUD99.00rrp). You can punch the part number in here
http://commerce-29.www.ibm.com/content/home/shop_ShopIBM/en_AU/ready2buy_036
.html

He also mentioned that the 1GB Microdrive (part number 07N5574) is scheduled
for a price drop very soon (to the sub-AUD900.00 rrp mark). If more space is
desirable and you're looking for more bang-fer-ya-buck, then a Microdrive
might be worth considering.

Having said that, the USB key _is_ uber-sexy!

This way works well. I use a 340mb microdrive under linux using a USB
card reader from flashmemory.com.au.

If anyone needs a hand setting it up, let me know.

I have an IBM one that works great under linux! Apart from compiling the USB
stuff into the kernel you also need to compile DOS filesystem support to get
it to work.

No probs- though a little expensive at $99...

I know IBM make one which is apparently platform agnostic, but do

So, anyone who is using one, and not necessarily the IBM one, could you

Linux and kernel 2.4.x

an alternative may be getting a 64 MB smart media (AU$105.00) and a miniture usb smart

I have one of the IBM USB keys, and (from what I have found by trying to
getting mine to work, and from others on the web) they won't work under

which will work under Linux.
