Wouldn't a HDD failure come up as a message on the console? The fact it happens cold and you have a new heatsink suggests it's not a thermal problem. I'd strip the components down (remove cards, RAM and CPU) and re-seat them all. Though it does sound like a mobo problem I wonder if the power supply unit is doing it's job properly.
