Not particularly a recommendation since I haven't tried it yet, but
I'm told Dates uses Evolution Data Server as a backend, so maybe you
can plug it onto a remote calendar server such as Davical. If not,
then that would probably be a worthy addition, since you could have
the same calendar on your desktop computer, laptop and phone.

http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-fso/files.git contains two URLs you can

Last time i had an iPod in my hands, i found the interface rather
unintuitive, limiting and confusing. I can't imagine how that can be
good for anybody.

What i'd like for an interface is just some consistency on default
installation and an ability to change anything later.

I'll try to provide the logs where after the Zhone restart %CSTAT
never comes but it's still possible to read the information from SIM.

In fact, as a quick work-around i added activation of SimReady to the
network registration event. What i see every time i reboot
zhone+frameworkd+gsm0710muxd is that right after the registration
zhone receives the SimReady signal and tries to read the
Phonebook. Not all entries are read, however as the sim is not really
ready yet. After some time %CSTAT finally comes and zhone rereads the
book, now with all entries present. I think i saw the same behaviour
using some simple (probably Nokia) cellphone.

Actually, i've just tried to gather the logs for the case of
restarting zhone and it seems that part of the phonebook was lost
during transfer from the phone to the ogsmd. No, really.

So, the modem firmware is buggy, the documentation is absent, and
though you can probably convince the guy who can modify the firmware
to fix this bug, it would be too late (he's now busy fixing #1024, i
suppose) and you don't want to mass-upgrade it anyway. So the only
possible solution i see is to let applications get the phone- and
messagebooks anyway. You tell them that sim is probably not ready but
if they try, they can get whatever the modem gives. When %CSTAT
received, you send them a signal to reread.

actually, an URL that’s better suitable for wget (as it does not contain
shell meta chars) is
http://pkg-fso.alioth.debian.org/freerunner/install.sh
which is just a redirect to the above URL.

I should mention that on http://pkg-fso.alioth.debian.org/freerunner/

Re: recommendations for calendar syncing between desktop and FR

2008-11-27 Thread arne anka

What do you all recommend as a setup for such sync'ing ?

is there some kind of calendar in fso already?
if not, the sync depends on the calendar installed on your fr.

if that's your question, so i propose osmo.
it small, it's in debian and since one of the latest releases it fits one
the screen of the fr just nice (there's a param you need to append on
start).

osmo offers additionally a contacts and tasks management.
contacts are stored as vcf (and i patched zhone to read them instead of my
empty sim), tasks and calendar use similar standard file formats (ical for
calendar, i think).
so, as long as your local pim supports vcf and so on in both directions it
should be pretty simple to keep them in sync with ech other.

No I didn't... But I have found in the meantime that I can just call it
.Xresources instead of .Xdefaults and it gets automatically taken into
account... (Using nodm BTW.)

However, I still can't seem to make it respect -geometry, even from the

2008-11-27 Thread arne anka

I sort of disagree with you. People do not read the manual when they get
a device. They try to use it and if they have to resort to the manual
the designer has failed.

with so complex a device the freerunner is, it is bound to require some
studying before being able to use it fully.

things like a mobile phone in the 21t century should be as close to
intuitive as makes no difference.

and that's, i think, is the core problem: the freerunner is no mobile
phone!

it does not simply do calls and sms.
it's a full fledged computer which allows even for phone functionality.

and for intuitivity: why has mcdonalds in the us of a to print "caution!
hot!" on it's coffee cups? who expects cold coffee in a newly purchased
coffee mug?

why has a microwave to say "don't put pets in here!"?

intuitive means basically nothing else than: meet the user's expectations
-- and those users are trained by other paradigms already.
the "start" button of windows 95 needed user training (who'd guess "start"
means shutdown?) and still there's a popup on hover telling you, what's
the meaning of so integral a part of the windows gui -- after about 12
years!

I can confirm i experience the same. I wasn't able to track down the
problem yet, but i have a suggestion. If you run o-p-p like this
(anyone please suggest a better example):

screen -d -m bash -c 'python -m trace --trace /usr/bin/openmoko-panel-plugin;

(you must have screen installed, of course), you might be able to see
the exact reason why it has quit (as soon as you see that o-p-p is
gone, reattach to the screen session by "screen -r" and you'll see the
last steps of the program. screen has a scrollback buffer as well. If

I know screen and how it works but i never thought of this way. ;)

I tested it and after my first try o-p-p starts and quits immediately
with a memory access error ("Speicherzugriffsfehler" in german).
After i started it again it runs for about 10 minutes and than quits
with [1]. Before this error all output looks fine with no error message
before it quits as i can see. Unfortunately this message does not say
which ressource is meant by "temporarily unavailable".
If it helps i can attach the trace log since i started o-p-p but it has
grown to 19MB for these ~10 minutes. ;)

 Rainer
