debian: zhone not sending sms

2008-12-27 Thread arne anka
there was a similar request on commun...@om on 2008-11-28 which no one of
the guys familiar with the intenral of fso or zhone answered -- and i am
stuck with the same issue now, a month later:
i hit the "messages" button (the one with the air mail envelope), then the
four-squares-button and "send", select a number, type my sms and hit the
green mark -- and that's it. the message stays in the list prepended with
"(unsent)".

the guy from community said, rebooting eventually sent the msg, but since
it is either a bug in zhone or framework id guessed, restarting both of
them would be enough, and indeed it was (at least the msg is prependended
with "(sent)" now).

since my last reboot there was no update on either framework nor zhone, so
the issue should be present itself to others, too.
the apparent lack of any other reports (afair) so far otoh seems to
indicate otherwise.
since there's nobody i can bother with sms to test and zhone.log and
frameworkd.log do not show errors i do not know what to do next ...

btw: while fiddling with eg
mdbus -s org.freesmartphone.frameworkd /org/freesmartphone/GSM/Device
org.freesmartphone.GSM.SIM.RetrieveMessagebook
i noticed that i do not undertsnad how to give parameters (other than a
simple int) to the calls. everything i tried only resulted in
/org/freesmartphone/GSM/Device: RetrieveMessagebook failed:
org.freesmartphone.GSM.InvalidParameter

a short example in every section of the documentation would be highly
appreciated.

Hello Arne

I think it is not dependent by Zhone. Just now I read on openmoko
community someone with you similary problem:

i don't think it's similar -- and if i am not mistaken, 2008.12 and
debian/fso have nothing in common.

anyway, receiving sms has not been a problem so far, just sending.

today, I tried to send a SMS, but it disappeared completely: Not
(unsent), and not received. Didn’t debug it though.

FWIW, I have been experiencing this bug in FSO since probably the
beginning and my solution for now is quite simple: reboot and then send
your SMS ASAP.

I also experience what is probably the same bug: I heard the SMS
ringtone (thus I received an SMS) but it is now shown in the list.
Again, if I reboot everything is OK and I can see the new SMS.

I am sorry, but debugging it would take too much time for me, and lately
(as you have probably seen) free time is rare. Moreover, while it
happens most of the time, this is not a reproducible behavior.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

interesting. did someone with a trac account file a bug already?
to the fso guys:
- how is this supposed to work?
- is there something that polls the message book? or is a signal sent and
received, resulting in sending all messages marked "unsent" or checking
for messages received respectively?

- where too look what happens?
- is there a way to inject sms to check functionality w/o actually sending
an sms? sending sms is not only expensive on the long run but you also
need someone to send to and get feedback from.

AFAICT, the message is sent, so it seems that it is the prepended "unsent"
which is the bug...

I couldn't find a bug about this.
You should be able to just send an SMS. zhone does this by first
storing the short message on the SIM and then sending that message. You
can issue the following commands in cli-framework when zhone is running:

>>> ref = gsmsim.StoreMessage("1234", "Text", {})
>>> gsmsim.SendStoredMessage(ref)

SendStoredMessage should then return the Network transaction ID and
optionally the date when the message was received at the short message
service center.

Because there was trouble sending SMS in the past zhone periodically
checks for unsent messages and tries to send them. Nowadays this causes
more problems than it solves, though.

> - where too look what happens?

Please turn debugging in frameworkd on. Add the following lines
to /etc/framesworkd.conf:
in [frameworkd]
log_to = file
log_destination = /path/to/file
and in [ogsmd]
log_level = DEBUG

Then look in the log and check if you see any Tracebacks or if
something weird happens around the sending.

Sorry, no easy way to test the whole path.
There are unittests for SMS PDU generation in the frameworkd repository,
but it's possible that your problem lies somewhere else.

There is org.freesmartphone.GSM.Debug.DebugInjectString.

True, and to test whether incoming SMS work that's enough. For outgoing
SMS we can't intercept the command that would be sent to the modem,
though.
