Re: [RCSE] RE: Forward sweep

2000-03-21 Thread Dave

I was always told that the swept forward wings on two place full-size
sailplanes was so that the trim would remain the same if flown by a single
pilot in the forward seat. The rear seat is on, or almost on, the CG.

Mario,

Really nice web site and the slope site (DOLOMITI MOUNTAINS
- ITALY) is no small deal either. Sure beats the central
Texas hill country.

I can't believe that a cell phone would have an effect on a
decent RC receiver. The frequency (both analog and digital)
is Very far removed from the RC band and the output
power is not so much as to swamp anything that is more than
a few inches away.

That's right, but the reason for the sweep is to get the wing spar, or carry through
structure from going through the rear seat
pilot. A J-3 Cub is flown solo from the back seat the front seat is on the CG also,
but the spar is over the front pilot's head.

Re: [RCSE] RE: Forward sweep

2000-03-21 Thread johnhazel

in some cases the aerodynamic reasons for forward sweep are
to simultaneously reduce tip stall and achieve a lift
distribution closer to elliptical. Try it on Liftroll.xls.

The practical problem with forward sweep is that, under load,
wing bending makes the tip's angle of attack increase so this
reduces the advantage in tip stall and elliptical lift distribution
gained by the forward sweep. Special tailoring of wing stiffness
has been used to reduce this problem in some aircraft such as the x-29.

For the small sweep seen in gliders there is some potential
in tailoring the pitching moment behavior near stall. However
slightly rearward sweep is what is needed to maintain steady
pitching moment during near-stall flight. Take note of the
comments about "schuman" planform compared to unswept ships'
handling and also NACA report 1339.

So for the small forward sweep seen on gliders you are probaly
left with rear seat visibility as mentioned.

While you're getting a copy of Liftroll you might want to try out
RCHL.xls to find the best launch in various wind shears and speeds.

[RCSE] F3j/F3b Question....

2000-03-21 Thread Thrmlboy

Hey all,

What's the 'standard' line size used for launching F3j and F3b?
I'm pretty sure F3b is 150 or 200lb mono.
But what about F3j? I seem to recall an FAI limit on line diameter/size, and
for some reason 70# mono sticks in my head.
This question came up this eve. when talking about line size for a zoom start
for 3m sized gliders. I'm using 50feet of the 5/8"od bungee and then ~200'
of mono for the zoomer thing, but not sure about line size/rating, (Is 40#
too light?).
Any help would be appreciated.

Later,
Tom
