Despite the fact that my description says the words "sailplane" and
"glider" about 3 times, I keep getting asked if it includes the engine!

I have several sailplanes and all but one have a motor. A motor is just
another way to launch.

thanks a lot to Ollie, George, Clarence,Richard and Tord for explanations.
In italy we do something similar: we start from a mountain ( S. Marino
State ) and we go to
land in a field near an italian village in the less time we can. Many
years agò
there was a competition from Cortona ( mountain ) to camucia ( in Tuscany ).
I was there and i had a lotta fun.
Time agò, I read that SD 6060 is for "cross country" (in prof.Selig volumes)
and i did
not understand what
it was. I thought something about that but not to a competition like this.
 Fantastic!
I guess that planes must be very light but good runners too.
I "know" Joe Wurtz; I have gotten his DS video.

[RCSE] ISR Slope Planes wanted

2000-04-17 Thread Gavin Botha

With the Davenport May 6, 7 International Slope race comming up, several
people are looking for slope quality gliders to fly. A slope quality
glider is typically an older, somewhat beat-up/repaired F3B ship that is no
longer up to F3B precision. Old Synergies seem to be a very popular
choice. Price should range from $200.00 to $500 depending on servo's
etc... If you have any beaters you want to get rid of, now might be a good
time to make some RCSE posts.

[RCSE] Charles River Radio Controllers Address Change

2000-04-17 Thread Joel A. Foner

I just discovered that our old ISP didn't actually delete our account in
February when we moved to our new home, and just started threatening me
with reporting to credit agencies - even though I have a documented trail
of them acknowleging the cancellation in February! (this is just the last
in a long string of things that didn't go right with them) After a bunch
of wrangling today I finally got the old site torn down and removed, and
all the billing nonsense reversed/stopped. You wanna talk about some
vendor bashing - boy could this experience get me going... In any case -
here's why I wrote about this to RCSE:

If your browser link pointed to the old site, you will now get a "404 - URL
not found" message. Another tip is that the old site wasn't updated after
January 5th! (old site address was http://www.addr.com/~crrc/.

If this has happened to you, please go to http://www.charlesriverrc.org/
and bookmark our new permanent address.

Sorry for using this space for indirectly soaring-related tech stuff, but
it's pretty clear from our logs that a lot of folks from the RCSE community
drop by - I didn't want people to wonder "what happened" if they were still
pointing to the old site, not to mention wanting them to be able to get to
newer content.

Regards and thanks,

Joel

[RCSE] Tyvek adhesive?

2000-04-17 Thread Silas Collier

What is the best way to use Tyvek (lightweight mailing envelope stuff) for
hinges? It feels so smooth, I wonder if epoxy will stick to it well. Can
you put a strip of it in a lay-up of glass over balsa to get a "living
hinge"? I'll be experimenting with this a bit, but would rather stand on
the shoulders of giants than re-invent the wheel.
TIA.

Re: [RCSE] Recipe for DISASTER or just rantings of a Crumudgeon???

2000-04-17 Thread DRICHMONDB

In a message dated 4/17/00, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

In my opinion, unless you're doing it for EXERCISE, throwing a ship upwards
during an electric winch launch is NOT A GOOD IDEA.

Well, it may not be a great idea, but it can be effective. We had a good
demonstration yesterday at the monthly TPG contest. Ron Scharck (IHLGF fame)
and I were flying the same plane (mine) and timing for each other.

My launch style is the rear grip, lots of tension and a good LEVEL heave.
The plane flies immediately, but requires 15-20 feet of air travel to rotate
to the climb attitude. The climb attitude is very steep as the plane is set
up to climb at maximum angle, but sometimes requires a touch of down at about
the 30 degree line angle. The adjustable tow hook enables the hook position
to be exactly positioned requiring no elevator compensation prior to launch.

Ron's style is the forward grip, moderate tension, overhand throw with a
slight 5-10 degree upward throw. The plane was immediately climbing, there
was no transition air travel. The result was a launch 50 feet or so higher
than mine. The air was good yesterday, so the launch height did not matter,
but on some days, that extra 50 ft could make a difference.

So will I use the forward grip? Probably not routinely as there is a
difference in the physical capabilities of Ron and I. I am about 5' 11", 175
lbs and 65 years on the planet. Ron is 10 years younger, 6' 2" and mega
mass. He can hold the line tension with his arm in back of him, where I
cannot and I run the risk of having the elevator hit my head during the
launch.

So Ron will you launch my plane for me??
