[RCSE] Visalia

2002-10-08 Thread David J. Schat

I did enjoy myself at the Festival, perfect weather, good flying, good
friends, fun toys to look at and buy, and I killed some brain cells at
night consuming adult beverages and laughing with my friends.

I also experienced a total loss of my plane in the third round on Saturday
either due to receiver failure or being shot down on channel 18. I have had
a Sapphire for over four years with the same equipment in it and the same
transmitter. I launched and had control on the way up. I zoomed and at the
top of the zoom my plane did a wing over and went straight in from the top
of the zoom. I nearly bent the stick stirring it around but had no control.
When I reached the pile of confetti I checked the on board battery
indicator and it was in the green which means there was power to and
through the receiver. I had the 1700mAh battery tested and there was 1587
mAh left in it. I will be sending the receiver in for a check up and
service and will be seriously pissed if it is OK. My transmitter is good as
I flew a friends plane (Thanks Craig) with it for the rest of the contest.

I'd also like to express a thank you to the dickheads who take a pin and
then sit on it during open flying Friday. This has been a common complaint
for years. I'd like to see it mandatory to put a pin with your name on it
on the pin board when you take the freq. This way we can hunt you down when
you bogart the pin. I know that some pins (channel 11) were out for hours
at a time. When people who were flying were asked they did not have the pin
so pins were in the pits. Ok, so a person may need to use the pin in the
pits to do some work but they should be ready to give it up when someone
wants to fly. This could even be done during the contest and would be a
double check that the wrong pin was not given out.

It hit me that when the F3X guys were taking a picture there was enough
money in the picture tied up in airplanes to buy a nice car. If you figure
that there were 300 pilots flying three hundred airplanes you get a picture
of the dollars involved at the field. I'd like to see a scanner in the
impound that could verify radio hits. I know you may not find the guy who
shot you down with it but at least a person would know he was shot down and
an announcement could be made so if the offender was honest he could come
forward. Or if they choose not to come forward they at least know they shot
someone down and will know that bad JuJu will be coming to them. I lost a
$370 Sapphire, it could just as easily been a $1400 Icon.

I'll be back next year fer sure...

[RCSE] Stabilator for Alcyone

2002-10-08 Thread Jennifer and Scott Martin

Anyone out there know where I can get foam cores for an
Alcyone three-meter stabilator ? I built my crooked, and I
want to build another (properly this time :-))
I noticed that NSP doesn't list the Alcyone anymore on its
web site (or perhaps I overlooked it); otherwise, I'd go
there first.

Thanks in advance.

[RCSE] Radio hits

2002-10-08 Thread John Erickson

I've put planes into the ground, and have had others put my planes into the
ground. Neither scenario is any fun. Those seconds before impact when you
are thinking about all the time and energy you've spent on this plane, all
about to be wasted in a heap of glass and carbon.

There were a lot of planes that went down on Friday at Visalia. Probably
most were radio hits, although some may have had other problems. I remember
flying in Phoenix and getting hit when I flew over a certain part of the
field. I was convinced someone was on my channel. I went around to
everyone that I knew was registered on my channel and asked if they had a
radio on. No one did. Now I was getting ticked off, thinking someone might
have left something on.

The whole weekend I was worried about getting shot down. About 2 weeks
later I was taking the plane apart and when I got to the receiver I noticed
something. I had taken the case off (it was a hand launch). The antennae
on a 555 solders to a circuit board, like most receivers. It is not a
strong joint. In fact, I rarely take the bottom of cases off anymore
because of this reason. There was a tiny break in the solder joint. It was
enough to have control most of the time, but during some flight loads it
would lose contact.

Another time I found out that a solder joint on my radio had broken and I
had similar results.

So what's the point? I don't mix well with solder.

There is no excuse for someone turning on a radio if they don't have the
pin. That person owes you a plane if you get shot down. That being said,
I've put myself into the ground a few times because of equipment failure
that is not apparent without taking things apart.

We are hard on our planes. All those dork landings take their toll. Not
just the plane, but the radio, too. On Sunday I had a new type of shed part
on landing. I had just hit a 25. I was pretty pumped up. I think I struck
a kung fu kind of pose with my "Yes!". The tip of my antennae was driven
into the ground like a saber. When I walked back to the impound tent I
noticed I was missing the little ball at the end of the antennae. I guess
this is a case for a rubber duck type of antennae. They withstand kung fu
celebrations better than long antennas.

RE: [RCSE] V-Tail Design

2002-10-08 Thread Bill Swingle

>From one of our experts, Mr. Don Stackhouse, circa. 1998:

This is a common question on this exchange. The short answer is make the
total area (NOT the projected area) of your new V-tail the same as the total
area of the conventional tail you're replacing. Make the angle from
horizontal on each panel equal to the arctangent of the vertical tail area
divided by the horizontal tail area of the conventional tail you're
replacing.

If you have a phobia about trigonometry, a lot of folks just use an angle of
110 degrees between the vees (in other words, 35 degrees from horizontal on
each side). Be careful though, when you get into MHLG's a lot of these types
of shortcuts don't work very well anymore.

There are several different ways to size a V-tail, based on different
criteria, but this is about the simplest. Most of the other methods come out
with nearly the same numbers.

There are a number of articles in the "Ask Joe and Don" section of our
website:

Ray,

He was obviously a jerk who is known to us. He knew to
much information which a flamer kid out for kicks
would know about too many people. It is really easy to
pose as someone else and spoof an email address. I
could send you mail in a minute that looks like Bill
Clinton sent it seeing if your daughter was interested
in becoming an intern. Steve Meyer had the key. Look
in the header for the originating IP. Most email
programs hide the headers but they can be seen.

Seems this happens every so often but in the end I
doubt any harm was done as your reputation is strong
throughout the hobby. You are a good guy and you make
great stuff. Hard on the ulcers though. Keep the faith
and see you in the spring. Woodies Forever!

2002-10-08 Thread Ray Hayes. Web Site http://www.skybench.com

This is a message I posted earlier that may have been lost to many in the
long Robert Bingham thread, so I hope you will forgive me for trying to make
sure everyone has a chance to hear my side.

Thanks to the many that sent off line support email to me, it was truly
appreciated.

I use standard business policies which include never bad mouthing another
website or anyone else's products as some do. The OLY ll is not a copy of
any other sailplane and Robert and others are lucky that Lee Renaud, the
designer, is not with us anymore to defend himself against derogatory
statements from lesser people.

I have been flying RC sailplanes since 1968 and have not lost a bit of my
enthusiasm and interest in designing, building, flying and promoting R/C
sailplanes. Ray Hayes
Gentleman,
Needless to say this thread has made my evening fairly bad. I am a one man
show with a part time helper and as you know do not have employees all over
the country.

I think Robert feels he is doing the right thing or Robert is having fun
disguising himself. In the ten years that I have been selling my designs
and others, I can recall one person who bought a kit (Challenger) from a
private individual (they both live in Ohio) and then called to say he could
not find some of the sticks or parts, I'm not sure what was named as
missing, it was approximately three years ago.

The person that bought the kit from the individual is definitely not Robert.
Reading back through the man's posts, he seems to have taken on the identity
of this individual in Ohio. The individual that ended up owning the kit is
likely watching all this crap. Now it could be that Robert is talking about
some other kit, but I can tell you that unless the dreaded decease is
setting in on me, I have had no one else asking for missing parts from a kit
they bought from an individual.

If you look back at a post concerning AMA's raising of the CD's dues, you
will see that he took a shot at me then too. So I don't know for sure what
this is all about, but hope that it comes to a climax soon, so the exchange
can be used as it is intended.
