2002-11-24 Thread John Derstine
Try the helicopter chassis manufacturers, They throw away or sell the 1/8
carbon plate holes from CNC routing the Heli frames. I usually grab a bag
or two every RAM show and it lasts me all year. Better than phenolic, which
may be available at your local radio shack.

Where can you get PC board? I've been looking all over.

Ben and others,
I live a couple of hours from Silicon Valley, and there are a lot of
electronics surplus stores there. I find mine there. You also might look
in an old TV set or radio for PC board, or check your yellow pages for
electronics sources. We have a Siemens plant here and someday, I'll go
through their dumpster. Radio Shack used to sell it, but, alas, no more.

All this is very interesting I guess but I must be missing something. Why
would anyone want to go through all that trouble? I just laminate 3 layers
of 5.6 oz bi-directional carbon and cut my horns out of that. Seems to
work fine for me and it's a whole lot thinner that a CD.

Well, I've done it...I've gone and gotten myself one
of these bagged-wing things. My reputation of building
my own stuff is gone down the tubes. In one hour I've
got the wings mounted and the joiner and incidence pin
located, trim tape on the fuselage seams, and the
control system figured out. I have to build the
rudder...there's a chore...8^)...and I may build the
stabs, though the ones Fred Sage built will be hard to
beat. This thing is even going to have a ...I can
hardly say it...a SKEG!!! Well, the next thing you
know...I'll be flying a moldie...I can't believe
it...me... a moldie whore...It's a sad day.

[RCSE] Joining surgical tubing

2002-11-24 Thread Tord Eriksson
The method I have used successfully for a number of years now
is simple and as yet without failure (it has seen over ten years of use):

Take a piece of rope (I used flag line) about the same diameter as the
inner diameter of the surgical rubber tube and wrap tighly the end with
coppar wire till it is slightly thicker than before - make sure the ends
of the wire are pointing inwards, as not to scratch the rubber tube
after insertion. The end should be inserted about an inch into the
tube; if it doesn't want to, try wetting it and the end of the tube a bit.

Now wrap the tube, with the rope inserted, in a similar way, now
ensuring that the ends of the wire points slightly outward ,as not to
scratch the tube and the wrap with tape or use a piece of shrink tube.

You can this way make rope hoops in the end of the surgical rubber,
for tying on a line, or to push the stake through, too, using a slightly
thinner line.

This method does not work for massive bungees, of course - then I
just fold the bungee over and wrap copper wire, or strong line, around.

Hope this helps,

Tord

Re: [RCSE] Old CD's as control horns

2002-11-24 Thread Chris Adams
I glue polycarbonate all the time for my scrollsanders. I have found that
certain types of CA glues will work just fine. Infact I have been using my
scrollsader ends for control horns for over 4 years with great success.

First, odor fee CA deos not work. Super thin CA from NHP has some thinning
solvent in the mix that dissolves tyhe CA. My horns are black so I can
see the plasctic whe it hit my fingers.

Thicker CA does not work as well.

I use 0.020 drills for my DLG control horn holes, and have also heated up
the wire and done a pluge drillinning via melting. the polycarbonate does
not break when twisted. Old CD's might break if there is some lamination
inside. However if you use the clear CD protective pieces whihc comes in
the bulk CD packs that should work just fine.

I have found also that the solvent needs to evaporate to get full strength.

I have had an arguement for years with someone who says it will not work,
but somehow I have made over 1/2 million sanders and have yet to have the CA
to sandpaper glue joints fail more than 25 times.

I have thought about making control horns from my sander pieces, and
generallu use scrap parts.

Good Luck.

Chris

 Joshua asks:

Making new control horns in about an hour. Will keep you posted. I
don't
know what glue works on polycarbonate - does anyone else?

The solvent for polycarbonate (which, BTW, is the generic name for
Dupont's
Lexan) is methylene chloride. Really nasty stuff (as are most of the
chlorinated solvents), keep it off your skin and use lots of ventilation.
You can probably find it in a hardware store or paint store. I don't know
of any commercial glues that include methylene chloride as their active
ingredient, but you can make your own by dissolving bits of polycarbonate
in a jar of methylene chloride.
