[RCSE] Mammoth information

2003-07-16 Thread Gary Linda Legerton

Hello everyone,
I would like to post some info on the upcoming Mammoth F3F race.
As far as campgrounds are concerned. There are many campgrounds around the

Mammoth area. Coldwater near Lake Mary is my favorite and that is probably
where
I will be staying.By friday night most of them seem to fill up near the lakes
so
If you can get there early Fri. that would be best. Sherwin creek camp is a
good
backup. You usually can always find a spot there and it is still very close
to
town.If you like aspens and a slightly lower altitude this is a good choice.I
would recomend that you not go to the campgrounds down in the Devils Postpile
area such as Agnew meadows or Reds meadow. Even though it looks close on the map
the road down is a single lane road with a few turnouts and can be congested.
They run shuttle buses down and close the road to regular traffic from 7:00am to
8:00pm I believe.
For those of you that want to stay in a hotel here is some info: I have
stayed at the Alpenhoff before they are quite reasonable and it is a nice place
to stay. They are also the closest hotel to the slope besides the main ski area.
Rates are $80 a night for 2 double beds.Their phone # is 1-800-828-0371
Here are some others:
Econolodge-$89 760-934-6855
Roadway inn-$99 1800-824-5132
Shilo Inn- $109 1-800-222-2244 These are mini-suites with refrigerators
microwaves and such.Ask for the managers special to get this rate. They are
normally $139.
I will be driving up Thursday night and plan on scouting the slope on friday
for the best area to set up the course and hopefully get in some DSng. I would
love some company if anyone would like to join me. I would recomend that you
come up a day early if possible. Particularly if you might have problems with
altitude. This will give you a chance to get aclimated some, the slope is at
10,200 ft!
Here are some directions to the slope with waypoints: Take the 203 exit to
Mammoth off of Hwy 395. Go through town and make a right to the ski area on
Minaret rd. N37.64873 W118.98310 Follow this road to the ski area and continue
about a mile past to Minaret summit and make a right just before the ranger hut
towards Minaret vista N37.65411 W119.05749 Immediately you will see a dirt road
going straight.Follow this dirt road (do not continue left on the paved road
towards Minaret vista) Follow this dirt road for about 3 1/2 miles along the
ridge till you get to the flying area. The dirt road is pretty mellow except for
maybe a couple spots that may require 4wd. I can shuttle some people in my
landcruiser from Minaret summit if anyone needs a ride. Here are some waypoints
of the slope and where I have flown before.
N37.66883 W119.06038 -- a possible place for the race coarse
N37.67981 W119.06376 -- The main area I have flown and the best landing
zone
N37.68494 W119.06555 -- The end of the dirt rd. where you park to walk to

Deadmans Pass
N37.68941 W119.07145 -- Deadmans Pass DS area and possible site for the best
F3F
I plan on meeting at Minaret summit at 12:00 Saturday and then driving to the
slope from there that way we can all hook up if anyone needs a ride to the
slope.
If anyone would like a topo map of the area with directions and sites marked
I can e-mail you the attachment if you like. Just ping me back.
Hope to see you all there,Gary Legerton

Jack, I just reviewed the landing info and it looks very good. I have just
one suggestion. Move the safety net 6 ft back away from the landing circle to
allow for those birds that will try to get over it occasionally. That extra 6
ft. buffer will help protect pilots, timers and an occasional official from
getting hit when a bird does get over the safety fence.
Also confirm for me, does over the fence and out of bounds mean loss of
your flight score as well as 0 points for the landing as I suspect it does?

They took the servo fixing in house after their techs went to Germany to be
schooled in the elfin ways of the Black Forest.
Ernie is only doing his radio servicing no servos. So Hitec in Poway has
control over the servo plus radios.

Cal, my interpretation is that any part of the sailplane past the line
defined by the safety fence results in a zero flight score, as it is defined as out

I think all the guy was asking is if you could use a marking color that
shows up for people who are color blind. Red can show little or no contrast
against grass for people with certain kinds of color blindness. That makes
it very difficult for them to actually see the landing target.

Seems like a reasonable request.

Also be sure to stop by my family's bakery in Mammoth or Bishop! Get some
Sheepherder's bread and Cheesebread.

The Owens Valley is a Mecca for soaring, full size, para-sailers and hang
gliders. The hang gliding WC's have been held there many times. Hang
gliding with O2 and jackets in the middle of summer covering courses in the
hundreds of miles. Damn good model flying also! I sure miss the place.

Last year there was 6 of us, 'blind mice". They did spray a little white paint over the red paint, after we brought it up.
But, I was still guessing most of the second day. That might have had something to do withthe single 100 score. All we want is an even field.

I'd say bring some white spray paint and offer to help change them... 8-)

I doubt there are going to be many more 100's this year no matter what
color they are, the scoring zones are tight, and they have the composite
disk over the 100 point zone just like last year. Hit it and your going to
bounce to low or no point land this year.

But they are the same for everyone and I am not complaining about it.

Probably the most appropriate place to discuss this stuff at this point
only days away from the big contest is in the pilots meeting before the
contest starts, with the CD and pilots at hand in a face to face manner.
