[RCSE] Blasters I have known

2004-12-24 Thread GordySoar

Vladimir Models Blaster that is, via Kennedy Composites.

In the case of DLG's, I am about as savy as I am about REStotal
newbie...and don't mind admitting it.

Since Bruce Davidison is a clubmate, and I am lucky to call him my friend,
I figured I'd get a DLG to chuck with him and the others on soaring days prior
to the winch being set up.

I have 'had' other HLG's and one other DLG but they were all baggies.
The Blaster is an 'organic/moldie' construction that can be assembled in about
two or three nights if you put your mind to it. There are a couple of good
instruction sites offered and Barry will be adding some detail to his site to
speed up first timers construction.

Pretty much you put some good masking tape on some micros and splooge them
into the nose, space away from the front so that you can fit your battery pack
and RX ahead. They fit inline, with one slightly tipped for pushrod
clearance. I was able to use 4 650mah AAA Nihms in the nose with a chunk
of dense foam to keep the pack from blasting thru the front ona hard
nose in, and a small 6channel RX behind it and in front of the servos.

The tail boom is a snap, Vlad has added some carbon rod on each side of the
vertical's tail boom slot to protect against snapping the boom off there on a
hard spin landing.

If you forget to slide the horizontal's Vmount on to the boom before
glueing the vertical in, no worries, just slot the bottom and it will snap over
the boom and can be CA'd back together yet still have plenty of diameter to fit
in the right spot for stab clearance.

The pushrods go on the top of the boom, I attached them to the horns in the
back, routed them thru the holed I drilled in the back near the boom, and
pulled them snug from the front to keep them straight, then dabbed some 'flex
CA' on them along their length.

To get horizontal alignment to the wing, I use a piece of balsa stock with
some two way tape, stuck to the saddle to simulate the wing being mounted, it
makes eyeballing the rear stabs a breeze while glueing. CA works in all
spots. I'm partial to Flex CA because it really doesn't crack but it is heavier
if that's a concern. I built this one for flying, not competing.

The throw peg has a reciever tube molded into the wing tip at the
appropriate angle, so you just slide the supplied carbon tube throw peg into
it.

Definitely an ARF, but is looking like its a DLG moldie on performance
expections on par with current top TD comp ships...but for DLG of course
:-)

I just wanted a quick build and a good flyer that was durable.

[RCSE] Looking for Tiplets for Zenith wing

2004-12-24 Thread rvmccleave
Here's another stretch for parts guys. I need just the little three inch
tips for a Zenith wing. They come with two sets, one being winglets and the
other just nice little curved tips. Either would do if anyone has them.
Thanks,

Pretty plane. Santa can I append to my list?
That Drela airfoil/planform is very effective in doing rolls. The DLG has
become a good plane to learn aerobatics without having a slope. Couple a
DLG and a Midwest slope and that should spell fun.

2004-12-24 Thread Bill H
I believe that was Bowling for Soup.

Also, Austin Williams was flying his Blaster in the video. He rang up a
near perfect win in HLG at the TNT contest this year with the original
Blaster that is about 2 oz heavier than what is being sold now by Kennedy
Composites. Note that he is just as comfortable flying upside down as he is
right side up. Not sure I ever want to be on a corporate jet (which he also
flies) when he is piloting, LOL! Look out California if he ever makes it to
the HLG Festival.

Merry Christmas All Glider Guiders,

Bill Heishman

Re: [RCSE] Interesting Club Traditions

2004-12-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

That one is easy. We got our first round in when the 'sprinkles' started. We
all ready had 2 tent like shelters set up with our 'feast'. Trying to outhink
Mother Nature, the CD called for a Lunch Break and we proceeded to the chow
line. About the time everyone's hands were full with plates and cups, the wind
came whipping across the field. One late arrival had set his planes near the
tents. Well, we all tried our best to grab what we could but one of the
corners got away from us and the aluminum pole was slammed downright across
the fuselage of both planes. That is how Jim got to be the only pilot that
lost 2 planes and didn't get to fly.

Here's another downside. NO MOUNTAINS. Sure it has it's place but flat land
gets tough to stomach after a while.

I pity folks who don't know real sloping. When your setup includes simply
flipping the ON switch, it's hard to imagine lugging and setting up a winch.

Re: [RCSE] dead battery question

| I seen I left a 4 cell, 1100 mah Nicad RX pack on for 24 hours.

Presumably the cells are all now 99+% empty ...

By itself, that's just fine with NiCd or NiMH cells, but the problem
is that in any pack of more than one cell, one cell is the `weakest',
and when all the pack is completely discharged, that weakest cell gets
`reversed charged' by the other cells after it goes completely dead,
which weakens it further.

Yes, it damages the pack -- in particular, it makes that weakest cell
a bit weaker. However, assuming that the pack is made up of
approximately identical cells (not carefully matched, but not mixed
cell capacities either) the effect is going to be small.

Doing this once, your pack is probably fine -- perhaps it's lost 1% of
it's capacity or so. Just don't make a habit of it.

If you have a cycler, you could cycle the pack and measure the
capacity just to reassure yourself that it's ok.
