What I do to remove servos glued in with
goop, is to take a small thin pallet knife (used to mix artists paints) bend it
90 degrees, heat it with a torch to hot but not glowing red or anything like
that, and work it under the servo. The right temp will soften the goop allowing
you to twist it our easily.

RE: [RCSE] how to disolve goop ?

2005-05-31 Thread Steve Meyer

I have been successful in using Spider Wire or dental floss
to saw out an old servo. Usually there is enough room to guide the
line under the corner of the servo and then just work the line back and
forth. The leftover adhesive/goop can then be scraped
out.

some would find this a complete show-stopper.

30 seconds! Dang. Yes this would be a problem for me. But, only because of

a common occurrence now that I've moved out of that area but still...

However, the bigger problem for me would be the price! I shudder to think

Vertical tow doesn't put anywhere near the stress on a plane that a winch launch does.

Why try and pretend that a toy plane is the same as full scale anyway? If you want to fly something that looks like a full scale sailplane then go to the full scale airport and take a ride. Scale...sheesh.

Right! Also, why call it a model? Most of the r/c gliders we fly are not
models of anything. They're not meant to imitate something larger, they're
merely meant to look cool and fly. Yet we miscall them models, forcing us to
adapt the inappropriate word scale as a substitute to fill the void created
because we misuse the word model.

RE: [RCSE] F3J in the Rockies Results (Revised)

2005-05-31 Thread Jim Monaco
Due to an unfortunate sorting problem, probably induced by adding a column
in the scoresheet to add in the preliminary scores, the actual order of the
standings was incorrect at the pilot's meeting. While the scores were
correct, they were in the wrong order in the final sheet resulting in the
incorrect awarding of the Trophys.

The Pilots have been contacted and the process is underway to get the
appropriate awards to the winners.
Sorry for the mistake.

The corrected standings are on the website at:

The results are in and Gordy had a terrible spate of bad luck. The good
news is that there was only one other plane totaled (Rich O'Connell on
launch) and a couple of planes with minor damage. While the air was
challenging on Sat, today brought overcast skies, cool (55 degree) temps and
much more difficult air. The blood was flowing in nearly every round. Rich
Burnoski flew a great final day and improved his standing from 7th to
second. Skip Miller continued to dominate with his excellent flights in
horrid conditions. While only Skip, Rich and Lenny Keer managed to make it
through the finals without one zero round, Skip was clearly the master, with
only one minor hit and 3 1000 rounds!

Attrition was severe as participants dropped out of the finals for various
reasons. Lots of zero rounds were recorded as the lift carried everyone
wy downwind - and with terrible sink on the way back. While there were
a lot OUT landings, there were no damaged planes.

Congratulations to Skip, Rich and Lenny who showed what difficult condition
soaring is all about!

RE: [RCSE] JR Aerotow

2005-05-31 Thread John Derstine
Hot dogging is fine if... both pilots agree ahead of time to perform,
and they are capable experienced pilots.
The down side is, or may be, that there is a chance that you might
intimidate or scare off a new guy to aerotow, who only walks up and
see's a 46% Ultimate go vertical with a 2 meter in tow. Did it last year
at JR myself. (By prior arrangement with the glider pilot) Incessant hot
dogging for the sake of showing off adds little value to any event, and
while I am guilty myself of once in a while having a little fun, the
majority of scale flyers have no desire to risk their 3-5 k 1/3 scale
planes doing stupid stuff, indeed a scale tow is a thing of beauty. I
have come to believe we have to set an example for everyone and tow
within the limits of the pilots abilities and the desires of the person
being towed. Some vintage sailplanes won't tow at higher speeds and need
sensible pilots to tow them.
That said, at a busy event there is economy in steep tows, remembering
that to go up steeply at full or high throttle decreases forward speed
and converts speed into altitude. There is no doubt in my mind if full
scale pilots could climb quickly and steeply, they would without
hesitation, it is economy of time, fuel, and physical stress on
airframes. Matching tow planes to gliders by size is not a bad idea
either.
Keep it safe.

 Who care's if it's scale

It is more fun having the tow plane do roll's one way while you do
 opposite roll's
and It's even more fun doing an inverted aero tow with the glider and
the tug anyway ...( If you ask Johnny real nice he will let you do
 just that)
Really, if you hang the glider behind the tug on tow there is less
chance
for the glider pilot to do something stupidwelleven that
depends
 on the pilot... ;^)
