[RCSE] Re: ESC troubleshooting question

2005-07-04 Thread MSu1049321
Wondering if someone can help diagnose my ESC problem.

This is a Castle Pixie 20 (which actually comes to me from Tower, labeled as
an FMA Super 20. Seems to be the same unit, just re-branded (guess Castle
merged recently?) A twenty-amp ESC with auto-protect for lipo packs, for a GWS
Speed 400 brushed motor and gearbox. (A scratch-built pusher powered fanfold
F-18 actually) .

Here's the setup:

Hitec Focus 3ss single stick 3 channel AM transmitter, used for most of my
planes, known good unit.
Matching Hitec HAS-03MB receiver
2 HS-55 servos
Said ESC

The problem is despite following the setup directions for the ESC, it only
translates my proportional throttle commands to a full-bore afterburner max or
full-off. Nothing in between. if i start the calibration procedure wit the
throttle stick somewhere in the middle, it will actually put he motor into
reverse if the lever is pulled far enough back, but again, all or nothing, no
gradations in the speeds.

As part of my troubleshooting, I tried a second, identical RX, same effect.
I tried putting another servo into the throttle channel, to see if maybe the
TX was not sending proper proportional signals... servo moves and stops
precisely along with the throttle lever, as you would expect, so the TX is
good, and
two RX's are good.

The procedure for programming this ESC unit is to turn on the TX first with
throttle to off, next turn on the ESC, let it sense for three seconds (I
gave it from three to as much as ten on all the tries I made), run throttle up
to
max, hold for same amount of time, bring throttle down, flip micro switch off
to store endpoint settings, then ESC is armed and proportional speed control
should be good to go. But all I get is all or nothing.

What do you think? I bought this thru Tower, I had to solder on my own
connectors and a longer wire to the on/off switch that came with the unit,
plus cut
some of the heatshrink away from the DIP switches to try and change settings
during troubleshooting, think is that enough to void the warranty?

Is this ESC FUBAR?

Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 a.m., a tight formation of four F-16 jets
made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at

Do the Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying

Regarding A wake-up call from Luke's jets (Letters, Thursday):

On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m., a perfectly timed four-ship package of
F-16s from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave
of Capt Jeremy Fresques.

Capt. Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke
Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day.

At 9 a.m. on June 15, his family and friends gathered at SunlandMemorial Park

Based on the letter writer's recount of the flyby, and because of the jet
noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my
words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son's

A four-ship flyby is a display of respect the Air Force pays to those who give
their lives in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our
jobs seriously, and on June 15 what the letterwriter witnessed was four
officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects.

The letter writer asks, Whom do we thank for the morning air show?

[RCSE] need advice for a altimeter

hi guys,
I'm looking for a altimeter that is small in size that will log my
max height.

I'm using it for testing my max launch height only, and want to be
able to read it when I land after a speed run.

I don't have a lap top, and it doesn't have to give me the height
verbally.
Just want to pull the nose cone off and look after each launch
and get an (accurate) reading.

I was stationed at NAS Cecil Field, the only time it got a little disturbing
was whenever we had a few too many the night before and a couple A-7 where
doing touch-n-goes...upwind to downwind was right over the top of our
barracks. That was quite sobering for the hang-over.

BUT, I never-ever heard of anybody complaining about a formation flight
giving honor at funeral service, until today. This lady must of needed a
soft white room during President Reagan's funeral, I think there was 12 or
16 F15's and one missing man formation. Think of your tax dollars lady and
the noise! (anyone got a straight jacket?)

Hi Everybody. It's family vacation time again. Last year I got a lot of
help scoping out potential slope sites in Telluride. This year, we'll be
going to western North Carolina around Fontana Lake and Bryson City. I've
checked and Greg doesn't have anything on Slopflyer.com in this neck of the
woods. Does anyone know of decent sites in that area?

TIA,

Rich Loud
