RE: [RCSE] Tripping modern airfoils, and why do flaps and spoilers do what they do?

2005-09-12 Thread Noel Wade

Scott -

I won't answer your question about "tripping" or
"turbulating" an airfoil because it really is horribly complex and
situation-dependant. Here's some info in the "Aerodynamics" section of Dr.
Martin Hepperle's site:
http://www.mh-aerotools.de/airfoils/index.htm

However, I *will* (in my own novice way) attempt to
explain why the nose of the plane changes pitch when you activate spoilers or
flaps:

Remember that your airplane has two "centers", the
center of gravity and the center of lift (or effort). One is the
theoretical "balance point" for downward forces on the plane; the other is for
the theoretical "balance point" of upward forces on the plane from the wing's
lift (which passes through the "center of pressure" of the airfoil).

See these links for more detail on
this:
http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/airplane/trim.html
http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/airplane/cp.html
http://www.allstar.fiu.edu/aero/Wing31.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Center_of_pressure
http://142.26.194.131/aerodynamics1/Basics/Page2.html
(currently offline, but excellent)

These two opposing forces rarely line up; and often
the tail surfaces are used to counteract any pitching moment that the airfoil
produces as it flies through the air and generates lift.

Changing the camber (the curvature) of the wing
surface changes the center of pressure and possibly the "effective" angle of
attack relative to the oncoming airstream (think about an imaginary line running
between the trailing edge of the wing and the leading edge. Now drop the
flaps - see how the angle of this imaginary line has changed?). Since the
center of gravity DOESN'T change, the distance between the CG and the center of
pressure/effortmight change and the pitching moments and forces may all
change. It is these changes that must then be counteracted by changing the
tail-surface deflection.

Hope this makes things more clear - the web links
are really great sources of info!

Take care,

--Noel

[RCSE] Wetting carbon tow ... a solution ?

2005-09-12 Thread Eddie Smith

Hi Guys to add a little more to this thread I did a little more research
on the net, talked to a number of suppliers here in Australia and have
come up with a design for a machine to wet out the tows.

It will consist of a vertical length of PVC tube of 35mm dia. closed at the
bottom with a nylon plug that has been turned to have a taper in the top
surface reducing down to a hole just big enough to pass the tow through
it with some drag. This pot is filled with resin with the tow passing down
through the hole. The tow with its small clearance to the hole will stop
the resin running out.
The tows would be fully wet out when they are squeezed through the hole
in the bottom of the pot.Below this is a pair of rollers that are
spring

loaded together.
The tow as it passes through these rollers has any excess resin wiped off
the outside of the tow which drips into another container underneath.

This assembly is mounted in a wooden frame and clamped to the bench
so that lengths of tow can be pulled through and laid onto plastic on the
bench.

The tows would be covered with absorbent paper and rolled to get any excess
resin out before being placed into the spar jig.

It has been suggested that if there was a low pressure supply of air directed
at the tow just before it enters the pot of resin the fibres within the tow
would

be separated a little and would pick up the resin better.

I've started to construct this set up today and have made the resin container
and part of the support frame.

I'm going to try pulling the tow through the pot of resin tonight to see if
the inside

of the tow is fully wet out.
The biggest problem that I see is the cleaning of all the machine after wetting
the tows, Obviously the machine will have to be easily disassembled to do this

Any comments or suggestions before I go too far ??

You can get long music wire from www.smallparts.com, or from any piano
tuner. I got a huge roll from an on-line piano parts company, a
lifetime supply for sixteen bucks if I recall right.

I later found it was easier to get stainless-steel leader wire from
Bass Pro Shop. It's not as stiff as music wire, but works fine for
pushrods.

Bill,

This is .018 wire for a DLG. You can practically tie it in a knot. It
needs a housing to take shape. The curve from the coil goes away as soon as
the push rod is in the housing.

I can remember back in about '78 that there was a couple of winches using
motors like that. They had a centrifugal clutch so that the motor was idling
and when you wanted to launch you rev'd the engine and it wound in the line.

They were banned quite quickly because of the noise that they made you
