[RCSE] Beginner sailplane recommendations

2006-05-26 Thread Jim Laurel
I know this has been discussed before, but wanted to get your current
thinking. A co-worker hears me talking about soaring all the time
and is asking about a sailplane for his son. Years ago I would have
suggested a Highlander, but they are no more and there don't seem to
be any really credible (i.e., decent performing) foamies. If you
want a nice molded TD plane, I can talk all day, but when it comes to
this kind of plane, I'm at a loss.

I'm thinking about recommending the Multiplex Easy Glider, which is
inexpensive and readily available from Tower Hobbies:

Any ideas appreciated.

RE: [RCSE] Beginner sailplane recommendations

2006-05-26 Thread George Voss
Personally I'd recommend the Easy Star since it's electric, he'll get more
flying time in per session. I'd recommend making the rudder 1/2-1 wider
since the rudder is pretty small. I taught my brother-in-law to fly with
one. gv

II would concur the Multiplex Easy Glider looks good for this particular job. Fixable and rugged EPP, looks like a "real" sailplane in flight. Also comes with electric motor option for launching instead of a histart or winch.
Inexpensive, so little to lose if they don't wind up liking it. Will work fine with a cheap 3-channel hitec single-stick or something more advanced. What's not to like?

[RCSE] where to donate model magazines in LA?

2006-05-26 Thread Rhokita

I use to donate my old model magazines to the Northrop Airplane
Museum in Hawthorne, CA.I read that their lease was not renewed and that
they do not have enough funds toopen a new museum. So is there anywhere
else in LA (preferably in the south bay area) I can donate my
magazines?Any School? Thanks!

[RCSE] Begginer Sailplanes

2006-05-26 Thread Ed Anderson

The Easy Glider is definitely a good first sailplane. It is not EPP but
Elapor foam which is more rigid making it better for this application, but
still very rugged and very fixable.

Wing loading is under 6 ounces so it will float like a Gentle Lady or a
Spirit with less probability of a trip to the repair table if you make a
mistake. And the ailerons give you more positive control in the air. The
upturned wing tips do give you some self leveling but not like a poly wing
plane.

It will launch from any hi-start and, if you replace the hook with a longer
hook, it will launch very well off the winch. It also does well on the
slope for moderate lift and the foam handles those rough slope landing
sites.

You will need a 4 channel radio to fly it using all controls, but I have
heard that you can fly it R/E as well. I have tried it, but only for a few
moments.

Only real downside is that it does not penetrate very well, but I have never
tried to ballast one up to see what effect that would have. Again, very
much like a GL or a Spirit in this regard.

Best Regards,
Ed Anderson
