The Sport Tube works for a lot of people and can be handy that it collapses down so far... until the day it does that with your plane inside it, for whatever reason. I've read plenty of such horror stories right here. No one solution is perfect for all. I use $7 cardboard concrete tube forms for some of my plane carriers/storage. But then again I don't take Unlimited ships around the country by airplane. I drive no more than 30 minutes and usually less to get to my flying sites, such as they are, and my main need is sturdy economy. Not stylishness or compactness beyond what fits somewhere into a 4-door sedan. I miss my SAAB 900 though: with the back seat down, I could haul just about anything in it. [RCSE] OK , I am Confused !!
Re: [RCSE] A possible sport tube alternative As far as I am concerned there is no alternative for the Sports Tube, especially if you use the machined side stops, to protect tour model length. Are we pissing and moaning aboutr replacements because Soaring oriented vendors are selling them? Does anyone really know what these things cost versus what they are being sold for? I would venture to say with condifence that these vendors offer the Sports Tube as a convienence to our hobby, as there is no margin to speak of... I too Travel a bunch, and try to take my model. I do not use the airlines so much, I use Fed Ex... cost me 80 bucks one way, to ship to the SWC. I did not have to worry bout the airlines losing it ,or the TSA turning my TX on and them closing the tube back up.. If you are too cheap to deal with the sports tube, only because of the cost, then you get what you pay for ...live with it.. BTW, I still have a set of Bostic sailplane boxes, and 1 Ship Miller fiberglass airplane box These guys quit making these boxes cause no one would buy them A possible sport tube alternative' Long live the Sports Tube My $.02 worth CJ -- Jack Strother Granger, IN LSF 2948 LSF Level V #117 LSF Official 1996 - 2004 CSS Gold -- Original message -- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I checked out the links and while I saw the sizes, I didn't see the part where they collapse down to fit in a rental car trunk. [RCSE] Question regarding 2.4GHz..Answer :-)
I have used the Hobbico locator. It works as you describe and will likely work with 2.4 GHz but it is so annoying to have to move the sticks just to keep the alarm from sounding. If they had a 10 minute window instead of a 1 minute window it would be ideal. This will work fine with PPM, PCM or 2.4 GHz stuff, and you won't have to do any special programming to make it work -- http://www.hobbico.com/radioaccys/hcap0335.html The lost plane alarm will be activated if the servo channel it's on stops getting pulses, which is what works with normal PPM stuff and doesn't work with PCM or 2.4 GHz gear. However, the transmiter inactivity signal (which sounds the same as the lost plane alarm) will still work even with PCM or 2.4 GHz -- if you stop moving the sticks (or if you go into and stay in failsafe), that channel will be idle (not changing, though it may still be getting servo pulses), and once it's been idle for a minute, the alarm start beeping as if your plane was lost. And yes, I've tried it. The downside is that your plane will get upset and start beeping if you leave it turned on and idle for a few minutes -- like when you put it down between flights. Most annoying. I wish they'd made the timeout five minutes instead. -- Doug McLaren, [EMAIL PROTECTED] You fight until hell freezes over. [RCSE] Flap flutter and servos for Pike Perfect Flaps
If you're flying a 80 series with socks, you're probably used to windy weather (and launching on an F3B winch with mono?). Go with 3421's on the flaps and stab, 368's on the ail and rud. A rib shaped piece of vertical grained balsa (1/8 inch) on either side of the servo to tie the top and bottom skins together will keep the servo from flexing the skins. I didn't do this, but I've had no flutter problems. My Perfects had all 368's with a 3421 on the stab. No problems. My next planes will have 3421's on the stab and flaps. Not that I've ever had a problem with the 368's, but it's more of a warm fuzzy and that I really like the 3421's. They only weigh slightly more than the 368's, but they're beefier and of real nice quality. If you're gonna fly a $2K plane, spring for good servos. Never had the need to replace any servo, but I still use the Greening mounts in case I need to do so quickly between rounds. Ben Clerx ** Create a Home Theater Like the Pros.
