Is your DS slope the same as the "Down Under" slope? And what wind
directions does the DS slope support? I might just make the drive

[RCSE] RE: Hinge Tape

2008-04-03 Thread atjurhs

I've used Blenderm and the HiLaunch tape on many of my planes.

Blenderm's advantage over the HiLaunch tape is weight. Blenderm is
much lighter.

However, I have noticed that the hinge's center-line seems to wander to
one side or the other more with the Blenderm than the HiLaunch tape.

just my 2 cents with no scientific basis

RE: [RCSE] Mortgage rates resetting? (off-topic)

2008-04-03 Thread Joseph Wurts
Tuan,

There is another possibly not so minor aspect to this
conversion. If your current loan is an origination
loan, it is non-recourse. The conversion is
classified as a re-finance, which is a recourse loan.
Only an issue if your house declines in value and you
try to walk away. The offer of this conversion is an
attempt to reduce the likelihood of losses due to
foreclosure in areas of declining home values. In
some areas, this is (or will be) quite an issue.

Joe
(now watching the US financial news from Christchurch,
New Zealand)

>>[RCSE] Mortgage rates resetting?

I know this is nothing to do with Sailplanes... well
in a way a little bit.
If you have an adjustable mortgage that is about to
reset and the bank is advising (read scaring) you to
convert to a fix, be careful. All the resets I know
are resetting at LOWER rates than what you currently
have. And the rates you will be locking in are higher.
By the time you add on fees to convert you are harming
yourself financially.

If I had an ajustable rate, I would keep it cause I
dont see interests going up any time within the next
1-2 years

Just a heads up. this could svae you money and you can
spend it on your favorite hobby :). I know citi bank
is notorious for this unethical practice.

You are welcome to email me for more info and proof.

[RCSE] Supra stab mount

2008-04-03 Thread D.O. Darnell

H

I haven't seen one broken while landing, but my flying buddy, Don
Harban, found that the pins in the pivot on his Supra stab mount were
loosened and was fortunately able to fix the situation prior to
loosing a ship.

Another type of problem can occur with these mounts if not enough
epoxy is applied between the boom surface under the rearward facing
edge of the ring portion of the mount. I'm thinking that maybe some
"failures" might have occurred due to either of these situations?

I keep an extra mount for each ship (Supra, Ava) because it costs too
much to go to an out-of-contest, especially if you suffer damage and
can't fly.

Anyway, its a good idea to check the pivot after every flight. These
ships are getting to be like F1 vehicles in that they are "edgy" and
need more maintenance than your average beater. .

Just a thought.

Best Regards;

D.O.

[RCSE] refunds

2008-04-03 Thread D.O. Darnell

APRIL 1st

Muncie, IN

Can it be true? AMA is to refund membership fees for last 10 years?
Additionally, Life members (those still living) shall be refunded
their "initiation" fee plus interest? According to sources, oil has
been discovered on the national AMA site and 12 rigs are pumping as
you read this! AMA also plans to install an on-site refinery to
enhance profits. AMA also plans to bundle derivatives for those of
you who like "sure-thing" investments. A provision of the required
transfer of corporate type - "non-
"for profit" - requires AMA to refund these fees. Transportation of
crude to the site will be via Lake Michigan. A lot of gas will also
be piped off the site's pumping station. Expect email from your local
representative soon, covering the up and coming IPO.

Another source mentioned the possible auctioning-off of the AMA
museum's contents by Barrette Jackson's Pooka division.

[RCSE] Torrie Pines Flying

2008-04-03 Thread David Wrinkle
Hello,

I'm going to be in La Jolla next week starting this Sunday. At this
moment I am planning on bringing my Half Pipe along. What I want to
know is it possible for visitors to fly at the Torrie Pines slope?
The website for the Gulls mentions a series of achievement's / tasks
that members need to do, and then indicates that visitors fall under a
different criteria. What that criteria is I can't seem to find. Am I
wasting my time to bring the sloper along??? Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

[RCSE] Aileron & Flap Carbon Fiber Pushrods

2008-04-03 Thread Robert P Buxton
Open Question to the group: Has anyone had experience (good or bad)
with using carbon fiber push rods for their aileron & flap servo
linkage. This past season, due to slow thumb response at that
critical moment of retracting flaps just before touch down, I was
bending the flap push rods (bottom hinged, linkage on top of flap,
servo arm on bottom of wing. Carbon fiber rods would give
stiffness/rigidity but would they be prone to breakage? This set up
was/and is on a F3J 144" Shadow. All comments and suggestions would
be greatly appreciated.

[RCSE] Fwd: FW: S3 Club letter

2008-04-03 Thread Lee Cox

  Dear R/C Pilots and Friends,

The Gamblers Gala Contest that was scheduled for July 12th & 13th 2008 has
been cancelled. It was cancelled for numerous reasons. Sierra Silent Soarers
club only consists of 16 members. As I’m sure you all know, putting on a large
two day event takes a lot of effort from everyone, and we just do not have
available manpower to conduct an event of this size this year.

As in most clubs the membership is made up mostly of senior aged pilots. I
turned 70 this year and feel that the amount of work required to run a quality
event of this type would be too much of a strain.

We are also concerned about the overall economy and the high price of gas
which is expected to keep going up. Some of you have to travel a long distance
to get here.

I and the S3 members very much appreciate your participation in the past
years, and we will miss having you come to Nevada and fly with us. I hope to
see you at one or more of the other events in California this year.

  Sincerely,

  Lee Cox CD
  Sierra Silent Soarers

PS: Again I / We are very sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you
with your travel plans for this season. Many Happy Landings.

Re: [RCSE] Aileron & Flap Carbon Fiber Pushrods

2008-04-03 Thread Michael Whitman
I haven't had first hand experience with carbon pushrods but I would
guess that you could also run the risk of stripping a servo with a
stiffer linkage if you failed to retract the flaps on landing again.
It's cheaper to replace or fix the pushrod instead of a wing servo.

Carbon fiber rods would give stiffness/
rigidity but would they be prone to breakage? This set up was/and is
on a F3J 144" Shadow. All comments and suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

Re: [RCSE] Aileron & Flap Carbon Fiber Pushrods

2008-04-03 Thread David Webb
I think that the concerning issue is your response time on the flaps. Almost
everyone who owns a contest sailplane has been here and failed to retract
the flaps in time. I use carbon push rods as do most of the contest pilots
these days. I don't think there is an obviously less damaging choice between
carbon or metal push rods.

The fact is that if you fail to pull up the flaps you should expect damage
in one form or another and its usually in the flap linkage connections. I
would not expect a reprieve from this damage in your choice of push rod
material. Use an elastic on your flap stick if you can't get into better
form on your flaps.
