RE: [RCSE] New sanyo batteries

2008-04-07 Thread John L. Baird
I have charged and discharged the 2000mAh AA Sanyo Eneloop cells at a 2 Amp
rate and have come up with great results. Months ago I read a thread on RCG
stating that the eneloops could not take high discharge rates. I decided to
test it myself with a 4 cell pack I had been using on my full house all
digital servo sailplane.

I first charged the pack with my Sirius Charge Limited Charger hooked up
to data logger(The Limited Charges at 2 Amps). The charge curve looked
almost identical to a curve made by a NiCd battery indicating that internal
resistance is not as high as other NiMh's The charge cycle terminated
normally and the pack did not warm up dramatically.

I then discharged the pack with a SuperTest Pro at a 2 Amp rate down to 4
volts (1 volt per cell) I still got over 1900 mA out of the pack.

I cycled this Eneloop pack repeatedly at 2 Amps and have continued to have
good results and will continue to use them in my Full house sailplanes. By
the way, I later went back to the RCG thread and found that poor test
results reported there were attributed to a loose fitting battery holder.

Thanks,
John

Anyone using the new sanyo eneloop batteries?

Yes. The claims about the self discharge rate being extremely slow
are completely true. It's extremely nice -- you charge them up, and
they *stay charged* even weeks, months later, even in your hot car.

The sanyo site says they have reduced internal resistence, but they
 don't give numbers.

This I'm not so sure about. This person measured it --

   http://www.stefanv.com/electronics/sanyo_eneloop.html

and found an internal resistance of about 0.1 ohm/cell, which would be
about 4x the value I've read elsewhere for typical AA NiMH cells. I
have not measured the internal resistances of any of these cells, so I
can't confirm or deny any of these figures.

In any event, the Eneloop batteries are great for my flashlights, the
digital camera I leave in my car, etc. They'd be great for TXs as
well, especially one you don't charge every time you fly. But if the
internal resistances that Stefan measured are accurate, they're not
going to be very good for RX packs. They might work OK for a few
non-digital servos, but I wouldn't use them anywhere that might draw
more than an amp or so.

Oh, Stefan says this --

This also accounts for the relatively high internal resistance
reported by my battery analyzer. The analyzer measures the
resistance either immediately, or when the battery first drops
below 1.2V per cell. If it had waited until the cells woke up, it
would probably have seen better results.

So he doesn't seem to have much faith in his figure either :)

RE: [RCSE] Re: ID this used sailplane for me?

2005-11-01 Thread John L. Baird

It's a Dodgeson Windsong or Lovesong. It is not a Maestro, Maestro
Megan,or Talisman. These Dodgeson sailplanes were of a prior generation
dating back to the early 70's with a round all glass fuselage. Early
versions of the Maestro had a rolled balsa boom. The wing construction on
the Maestro series was built up and sheeted with balsa.

Your plane can be flown off a Hi-start; I would suggest one from Aerofoam.
Mounting the servos in the wing and using electronic mixing could also
improve your experience with the plane.

This is good sailplane and it will take you a long way.

Have fun,
John

Sorry if this turns out to be a duplicate. I posted
using the web page yesterday and the message did not
show up. I am trying to post through email this time.

I recently purchased several large sailplanes from a
friend of a friend. The lot originated from a pilot
who had passed away. I want to gather information on
the sailplanes before I start playing with them, but I
do not recognize one of them.
The Bird of Time is easy to recognize, and the book
that came with the Mystery Ship makes ID easy. But
the third sailplane is unknown to me. It has a 12'7
wingspan, RES, fiberglass fuse. Pictures available
here:
http://www.vinceherman.net/tempsailplane/IMG_3582.JPG
http://www.vinceherman.net/tempsailplane/IMG_3588.JPG

I can take more pictures or answer any questions on
the model to help. Thanks in advance.
Vince

p.s. To see the whole mess piled up in my garage,
alone with the transmitter, histarts, a NIB Bird of
Time kit and a 2 meter Spirit that I got from another
club member, go here:
http://www.vinceherman.net/tempsailplane/
I think I got a good deal. :)

Ian,

To = a

This thread rings close to home tonite. Earlier this evening our club was
giving a demo for some school kids at a small field in suburban big-money
acreage land. I flew a tried and trusted Quaker old-timer with at least a
couple hundred flights logged (yes, it had an engine, no, it was off, but
that's irrelevant) and after three successful flights the controls locked
up about a thousand feet up and away and the result wasn't pretty.

Extensive post-mortem shows the batteries were okay, the servos all
function, a range check of the remains was okay and the switch was on and
functional. And there were no other participating transmitters on my
frequency. Which leads to the interference theory. I've been flying 26
years and have never experienced such an event and have a personal
aversion
to attributing pilot error to interference; I don't do that lightly.

But the nagging thought that keeps coming back (considering the local
landscape) is that there could have been someone in the vicinity
innocently
flying a slow-flyer in the back yard.

I can't prove I got shot down, but can't help thinking it. The
mass-appeal, anyone can do it mentality that goes with those damnable
back yard abominations is going to signal the end of organized RC flying
anywhere in radio range of modern suburbia...

My personal stance it that I won't buy one, fly one or even suggest that
anyone use them to get into the hobby. And if you have one, next time you
flip the Tx switch to entertain the neighbors, stop and think about anyone
else who could be flying in the vicinity.
