[RCSE] Sailaire Spoiler Servo Mount

2004-10-12 Thread Richard Jones
Hi
I'm currently building a dchobby's Sailaire and the plans are not very
clear about where the servo for the spoilers should be mounted.

The control tubes for the spoilers exit the wings at quite a sharp angle
so I'm guessing the servo must be quite far forward?

Also I've seen a few posts mentioning actually putting mini servos in the
wings for the spoilers, is this a good idea?

If wanyone has a picture of the servo bay of a sailaire could you please
send it to me?

Thanks
Richard

[RCSE] Breaking strength of CF

2003-03-11 Thread Richard Jones
Does anyone know of a site with details of the Breaking strength of various
sizes of Carbon Fiber rods and tubes?

I want to know what size CF rod to substitute for the normal silver-steel
wing joiners.

Thanks

RE: [RCSE] receiver crystals

2003-03-10 Thread Richard Jones
I know it's not recomended, but guys at our club have had interesting
results by mixing crystals and receivers around.
There seems to be no set rules, but by trial-and-error we have been able to
extend the range of receivers quite significantly just by trying different
crystals.

So I would go ahead and experiment, if it is better than the original then
stick with it.

Although I always do my range and other tests at the field with other flyers
around so that if there's any interference related issues you'll pick them
up.

Hi does anyone know of a good web shop selling plans of sailplanes, that has
pictures of the planes?

All the sites I've been to are only text.

[RCSE] 1/4 scale Ventus

2002-12-03 Thread Richard Jones
Hi,

I've got an offer to buy an old 1/4 Scale Ventus Kit (made in Zimbabwe) for
ZAR2500 which is about $250.
Is that a good price, it's for kit only not the radio etc.

RE: [RCSE] scale plans?

2002-11-25 Thread Richard Jones
try www.vth.de it's a german site but they have lots of scale plans for
powered and unpowered flight.

If you search for "Engl. Sprache" or just "sprache" you'll get all the
english plans.

Subject: [RCSE] scale plans?

Hi all,

Anyone have a good source for scale glider plans? All I've found is SE
Modeler, and they are mostly too small.

I'm looking for 1/4 scale, built up - I am leaning towards Bob's
documentation, but that means scaling all up manually, and if there are good
plans out there already, I'd prefer that.

Thanks in advance,
Brent

[RCSE] Bobcat mods.

2002-11-25 Thread Richard Jones
Hi everyone,

I've just received delivery of a Dynaflite Bobcat, and as I'm still
finishing off my current project, I was wondering if there are any
suggestions of modifications for better performance of the Bobcat that I
should be aware of before starting?

Thanks
Richard

[RCSE] illegal frequencies

Just out of curiosity, as I'm from South Africa, what are the penalties for
using an 'illegal' frequency in the States?

You will have to take into consideration that your target buyers are
limited to Ham Radio Operators, since the radio is
On a frequency usable only by licensed "Hams".

Unless they want to change the frequency. (But I wouldn't sell the
module to a non-ham to prevent misuse.)

RE: [RCSE] Speed Control Question!

2002-11-14 Thread Richard Jones
Hi Jim,

You say you use it for speed control, do you mean you have a sliding
connection along the steel bar that works like a car accelerator for the
winch?

Jim, I use a strip of stainless steel to drop the voltage on my winches for
speed control. This is much easier than pulsing. You could run a similar
strip of stainless in your drive circuit of your retriever. Try 1" wide,
.032" thick and about 18" long to start with. With a meter you could check
the voltage across the motor under load and trim the length to get the power
you need.

RE: [RCSE] Flying a wing for the first time

2002-11-13 Thread Richard Jones
Thanks for all the comments, I have put some more pictures at:
http://users.deadset-chat.com/fantastico/
They were all taken a few weeks ago before I started covering, I'm now busy
covering using Dave Browns SkyLoft and Dope.

The plans come from VTH a german model web store with an excellent plans
section. you can find them at: http://www.vth.de follow the "Modelbau" link
then "Onlineshop"
Most of the plans are in German (like the one I bought) but if you search
for "englisch sprache" you will get all the english plans.

So not only was it a complicated plane to build I also had to struggle
through German instructions.

Yes, Chris, I had to first build a curved building board for the wings and
another curved one for the wingtips before I could actually start with the
plane. But now the building board doubles as a storage case so it's ok.

Thanks for the suggestions too, but general consensus is that the CG is very
critical on a wing but yet some of you suggest adding weight to the nose for
the first few launches?

I like the idea of using a pickup truck to test it, maybe Izak can help me
out on that.

thanks
Richard
