Re: [RCSE] September/October thread -- interference
I had arecent encounter with a park flier myself. I helped him solo his POS, and his dad even took a turn at the sticks. They were both grateful to get the help, and I was also able to educate them about frequency control (they didn't have a clue). I hope to fly with them again sometime. These people are interested in participating in our hobby - I say let's bring them into the fold. As an added bonus - they expressed an interest in gliders andI was able to refer them to DAW and some of the other fine vendors that provide us with our toys. RE: [RCSE] Illiterate generation? / Model Magazines
Personally, I wonder if the trend in magazine contentjust keeps pace with the hobby. What I mean to say is that the trend away from building models and toward purchasing ready-built models would seem to leave little room for interesting content. I understand that mounting servos in a moldie wing can be a daunting task, but the mags probably don't need to run a series of articles on this. Most magazines will cater to the masses. They want the largest circulation they can get. If the masses are flying modies what content will sell subscriptions to them? It's an instant gratification type of audience. That's where RCSD is unique in that we (the modelling community)determine the content of the magazine. If RCSD content has slipped it may bemore an indication of the fact that the community at large just doesn't participate in the more technical aspects of modelling any longer. [RCSE] Need advice - Park District classes
I have an opportunity to work with the local Park District to put together an introductory class. I have a hunch that there are some among you that have done this already, and would be in a position to offer some advice. Here are my initial questions: Given that I'd like to keep the cost of materials within reason, I think I'm pretty much constrained to free flight. What's a reasonable progression of models for a class? Should I just have them build AMA Cubs (Delta Darts) and call it a day? Will this generate any enthusiasm among the participants? Should my class be directed toward father/son enrollment? I can get access to a reasonable size gym that would be suitable for indoor R/C, and I'd like to leverage this class into flying site opportunities for the local club (SOAR) both indoors and outdoors, so I don't want to start a free-flight club necessarily. In other words, I'd like to move to R/C at some point in the progression, although that could (should?) be another class. Any thoughts on this topic out there? What's a low-cost way to make the transition from FF to R/C? BTW, we don't have any slopes to speak of, so slope foam isn't a viable option. In summary, I want to use an in with the Park District to bring new people into quiet R/C flight and use the (hoped for) success of the program to obtain flying sites which will benefit the local club. Any advice will be appreciated. Feel free to reply privately if you feel the topic may be of no interest to others. Ron Weaver Buffalo Grove, IL USA __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful.
