Re: [RCSE] The infamous dive test

2001-08-19 Thread SoarSOSS
Boy, did I see a dive test today, where it just continued to dive, as the
pilot was screaming, "where's my plane", at the same instant I heard this
high pitched flutter/scream behind me, and turned to see what it was, THUD at
terminal velocity.
He was 38 minutes into his 1 hour LSF thermal flight when this happened, he
had been circling at about 1200-1500 feet AGL. Lost site in the sun for an
instant!!!

[RCSE] (Formerly) Batteries -- Correction to past story

2001-06-19 Thread SoarSOSS
Jon and all others interested,

I learned last night that a battery problem did exist during the recent
Montague X-C Challenge event in Montague, CA.
The battery, for whatever unknown reason of Rich Tiltman's SB/Spicer T did
crap out during one of his flights on Sat. They did accomplish a quick
battery change, and the plane was in a terminal speed dive, but when Rich
pulled back on the stick to regain control of the plane, a wing tip panel
blew up. Being the expert pilot he is, Rich was able to control it to a
landing, not a terminal crash. He continued on in the contest with a back up
plane.
Just to keep things on RCSE up to date and correct as I know it.

Dick,
Your HLG, which probably weighs about what; 15-20 ozs? How does it fly with 2 1/2 lbs of ballast in/straped to it in 35MPH winds? ;+))

 Really only kidding
I flew my S1-26 HLG with lead taped all over it at Cape Blanco in 38 MPH south winds this past spring. Boy would it cook.

[RCSE] November Contest

2000-11-12 Thread SoarSOSS
Hi all.
SOSS, Southern Oregon Soaring Society, has just completed their Nov. and maybe last contest of the year.
Set up temp. today in Medford, OR was 31 degrees. We flew 4 rounds of International Duration, 5-7-5-10, first two rounds were not bad in that the scheduled flight times were reduced by 2 minutes each, from the announced flight times. The Sun came out, so we went with the announced times for the last two rounds.
In the 10:00 minutes two actually made their times and with landing points.
We started with 7 entries, one encountered a tree in the first round, during landing set up, and DNF.
We will try a Dec. contest if the weather holds, we are keeping our fingers crossed.

Planes entered, today, 2-Millimunms, 1-Bird of Prey, 1-KA-6 foamy, 1-Bird of Time, 1-club trainer plane, and 1-7pack electric with a timed launch period, and he, John Slatea was the winner of the contest. Launches was not a problem, he is good flyer, and scored on all landings.

Was a good contest as bad as the day started out.

Re: [RCSE] Fusible link

2000-03-10 Thread SoarSOSS

Hi all,
I like Brian's method, it's normally called learning and knowing how to use
your equipment, it's limits and it's draw backs. Pedal to the metal is not
the most desirable way to launch any plane on a good, strong winch. Of
course some of the bigger, heavier planes will need all, some winches will
put out.

It's just business. The company must maintain the retail pricing, when they
are bypassing the dealer/distribtuors. Other wise, instead of a
nation/worldwide system of getting their products out to the masses, they
would be doing it all alone from ONE spot. No dealer/distributor would work
with them, to market the companies products.
