What's the big deal about knowing what plane is being flown?

You give most top pilots a F'n Brick and they will get their 9:55 and a 100..
So your an average pilot and you think buying the latest greatest plane is
going to put you in the top ten? I don't think so.. Did you really do that much
better with your prissy $2,000 Icon than if you had practiced with your $100
Oly2 ???

Why did Gordy do 50 places better than me with the exact same plane? Skills
Baby.. :-)))

Z :-)

The Sharon? Where are they in this list?

Its not on the list because of its weight...but its a F3J list. Not a TD
list, it got off the F3J list because of the need for late evening fast tow
times.. Out of all the planes I own, you'd have to pry my Sharon from my dying
hands before I'd give it up for TD. :-)

[RCSE] CD's collecting info.

2008-07-02 Thread ivanbrian
With all due respect. Tony did what he could. And how tough is it to have
the entrants jot down the name of their ship when they sign in. ?? If they
won't for some reason, then all others won't know what they flew. Most folks
including Chuck want to brag on their ship. Especially when you have scratch
built your own good flying design as Chuck has. And many of us want to hear
about them. If you want stealth, that is all right with me too. CD'ing is a
thankless job at times. . I started doing it in 1980, I have not been CD'ing
the last few years, but this is sure no big deal as far as added work load
is concerned. If I CD any more events y'all will have all the model info
the entrants will give.. If your one of those who does not care for
that info just scan right on over it. My 2 cents. Over and out on this one.

Yesterday I noticed that my quite old McCann turnaround had seized up. I
took it apart and found some metal parts had disintegrated rendering it
inoperable. I sent off an email to Tim enquiring if I could buy a new
roller and bearings or if I should get a new turnaround.

Less than an hour later he responded that the parts would be in the mail
on
Monday at no charge, and asked if I could send him back the failed parts
for

analysis. He said he hadn't seen one fail yet and wanted to see what
happened.

I had no expectation of even a discount on such an old and well used item,
and was blown away at his service.

Thanks Tim... Such service is much appreciated...

Jim

I just wanted to share this with everyone...

My Mother called me last week and told me she was worried about my Dad and
his health... He's 85, Fought in the battle of Britten at age 17 and was a B-24
pilot once America joined the war... He has trouble breathing now because he
was a 50 year smoker..Its touch and go with him... Never knowing if this is the
day.

So I took over to their house my latest Electric tow plane to put
together A Stinger 120 ARF using a 5340AXIS and A123 batteries.. Thanks
Brian Chan :-)))... He loved it... You never know with my Dad.. I was so
worried he would think it was a piece of crap.. But it has made him so happy to
be a part of helping me put it together... Its almost done and I can't wait to
fly it for him

So all of you with aging parents... All I can say is is try and make them
happy and just maybe.. You will find happiness yourself and some wonderful
memories too :-)))

Craig ..

[RCSE] Triathlon/ Contests format.

2008-01-11 Thread ivanbrian
The very 1st contest I ever entered was triathlon in Cincy in 1980. I was
flying a Drifter 2. I had never seen a winch, and Capt'n Jack had to pedal my
model up for me. Hey I won, and I have loved triathlon ever since, and that
plaque is the only one I have kept all these years. Brian

It's been a long time since I flew it, but Triathalon seemed like a
challenging event for contests. Anyone still flying that?

[RCSE] TD fuse and tail for sail

2008-01-11 Thread ivanbrian
Hi Folks
I picked up a NIB Thermal Dancer. I really only wanted a wing and WR, but
this seemed to be the only way to get one. So I would like to sell the fuze
parts. It is the fuse/Pod. CF boom, the CF control rods, tow hook on the mount
assembly, bagged elevator/stab with the CF V mount, bagged rudder/fin assembly
misc kevlar cloth and some wood parts that come in the kit. I'm asking $225
shipped in the CONUS or $200 for a local pick up or sale. If it does not sell
at that price in a day or two I'll be open to offers. Sorry no Pay Pal. Bank
check or Postal MO. Thanks. Brian Smith Tullahoma Ten.

Maybe we should just do politically correct soaring contests and not keep
score, like many kids sports programs these days. We wouldn't want to hurt any
ones feelings, now would we?

Marc is right on. At a real contest, this sort of thing is fundamentally
unfair. If everybody launches into the same air and one guy finds the air and
gets max, while 6 out of 7 guys mess up and land early, they have to earn low
scores, in fairness to everybody in the contest. The air was there and they
blew their shot. Setting up some artificial scheme to pardon their failure is
better policy for club contests than for the real thing -- sort of like
allowing free popoffs.

The more that jump to 2.4, the less using 72. The moron factor is thereby
reduced on 72!!
I haven't had a problem on 72 and have only witnessed maybe 6 shootdowns in

The only type of contest I know of that is pretty unlimited in amount of
transmitters out is a soaring event. I have counted 32 planes in the air at
Visalia. Could be more at times.

I could be wrong but most events (powered aircraft) limit the amount of
transmitters out (based on flight stations) at any one time. The IRCHA heli
event may be an exception.

I had heard the magic number for 2.4 is 41. Who knows for sure. That is
one reason why I'm not ready to completely abandon 72 mhz.

[RCSE] 2.4

2007-12-26 Thread ivanbrian
As is normal on RCSE if you say anything it will be taken out of context by
someone.
YUP.. I'm so happy with my DX7s and the X9303 that I'll probably start
giggling soon. ;o) For me it was the best thing since the original
red/white-green/white-yellow/white.. Remember that? I'll start worrying about
2.4 when I start hearing pilots going down screaming 2.4- 2.4 -2.4 instead of
Ch 26 Ch 26 ch26.. All the rest of the WHAT IF's Don't bother me at all.. I
have been on 2.4 for nearly a year and I feel like I already have my moneys
worth of, I can't launch the wrong model and freedom of a shoot down as did
nearly happen twice in the last couple months on 72 with my Giant Scale gas
models.
-BUT- no where, no how, did I ever criticize or condemn anyone for staying on
72. If your happy, I'm happy that your happy. HOWZAT? Grin -Smile.. I still
love y'all!! Even Gordy. Brian Smith

[RCSE] winch/Line talk

2007-12-24 Thread ivanbrian
I notice most, (not all) folks who are looking for a better way to limit winch
power on our present winch/line problems are folks who put on events. I was the
winch master at a pretty decent size event last summer and some of the nicest
folks said some pretty unkind things to me while I stood out it the 90 degree
weather for 3 days trying to make it a fun time for all who attended.
I personally think it IS time to limit the winch power to run safely on 200
pound line.
The soaring gang are a very wise bunch and I'm confident it will happen soon
and be followed all across the country as a standard. As Daryl mentioned even
the manufacturers will benefit from the new technology.. Brian Smith

[RCSE] Re:line breaks

2007-12-21 Thread ivanbrian

With all due respect I disagree Jeff.
At our local field when we launch to the north, it takes all the line off
the drum.. We get much softer, less powerful launches.. As opposed to when
we launch to the south we still have approximately half the winch line left
on the drum at the time of launch and the launches are much more
aggressive/powerful and all the broken lines and broken models come at the
south side.. Just My observations here in Tullahoma.. Brian Smith

Charlie less drum diameter will lead to more line breaks. Since you have
more torque you can now crank more turns in and break the line easier. --

[RCSE] Winch line/power/shunts

2007-12-21 Thread ivanbrian
So for my new winch I'm assembling I need a 12v motor with Optima batteries?
Who knows about shunts in the 12V LS Ford starter motor? I built a winch once
upon a time that had a 12V motor. Worked great without killer/line breaking
power. Ran very cool, and gave adequate launch power. Some one told me the
shunts were cut? HUH? Help.. Brian Smith

My intention was to say that, in order to remain competitive, you will likely
find it necessary to go to stronger, more expensive planes. This makes it
harder for sport flyers who do not have big budgets to enter into a
competitive
  position.

Harder? Sport flyers are competitive the minute they enter a contest. IF
they put what ever ship up into 10mins of air and put the nose on the spot,
their personal score will the best possible.

A 'sport flyer' entering a contest with a Perfect, Insanity, Supra,
SuperduperSupra, or DPCougar doesn't put him in a 'competitive' position. He'll
still only pilot that model to the best of his skill, experience, practice and
talent...which isn't going to equal those pilots. We have all ended up with
better scores than guys with 'better' sailplanes.

So lets drop the argument that having weaker winches will some how make our
contests a kinder gentler more inviting place for newbies and sensitive types.

2007 had less broken lines than 2006 due to the new line (maybe more pop offs
), batteries are something we replace each year or so anyway, so where's the
beef? (I think clubs using Optima's will agree that they seem to have a
little less punch so that would take some edge off launch stress).

Anyone interested in attending a contest where the winches have been de

300' average launches?

Doesn't scare me but it could make for some pretty awful total time in the
air for the time/cash investment of a lot of modelers.
