regarding 50 inchs being a class or event.

i agree with tom that this is an event. the cd of any esl contest can call
any event that he likes as long as it is advertised in advance on the esl
site. that being said, the esl contest cd is obligated to organize and run
a contest that is consistent with the rules and goals of the esl. in other
words, he can not make up some arbitrary, or silly, rules or tasks.

from the flyesl.com site: GOAL OF THE EASTERN SOARING LEAGUE: Enhance the
sport of radio controlled (R/C) thermal soaring through the establishment
and maintenance of reasonable standards of contest operations. it is clear
that the intent of the esl is to promote thermal soaring. a secondary goal
is to increase the membership. in past years we have changed the dues
structure to gain more members and we recently agreed (at the 2004 esl
meeting) that we would support a hand launch series of contests within the
rules that were hashed out on this, and other, site(s) with the goal of
attracting that group of fliers as well. the idea had the goal of providing
an organized venue(s) for hand launch fliers.

the issue of what airplane you can fly in one of these events is just like
the two meter events. you can fly any sailplane you like up to two meters
in span and, in this case, any sailplane you like up to 1.5 meters. so, if
someone wants to enter a hand launch contest, they can fly a 50 inch
sailplane if they like. if the cd decides to provide awards for 50 inch
sailplane finalists, that's fine, but i believe that the 50 inch flier must
be scored against all the hand launch fliers to qualify for end of year
points and standings, .

my comment regading electric fliers may have been a little over the top, but
i don't believe that the goal of the esl is to develop special interest
groups.

ps. a couple of years ago at crrc, one contestant smushed his unlimited
ship and finished the contest with a hand launch sailplane.
