Today was my first encounter with Gordy, other than the internet.
He rubbed me the wrong way at first...
Strong personalities generate strong reactions. Fact of life.
Ive known Gordy for ten years. I have bunked with him at
the Nats back in the 90s; Ive flown with him at MWSC; and
Ive read hundreds of his message posts on RCSE, and scores
of his columns and articles in R/C Soaring Digest.
Gordy is unmatched in his enthusiasm for RC soaring and not shy
about sharing (expounding?) his knowledge, most of it based on
experience. Some have tagged him a know-it-all. Maybe so, but
this cant be the first time youve encountered a know-it-all.
Most flying clubs have em. If this bothers you in a free-for-all
message base, use your delete key; no need to get your panties in
a bunch.
One thing Gordy does that separates him from the pack is he WRITES for
magazines. Lotta guys have plenty to say; not as many regularly submit
articles for publication. Its one thing to post Internet messages(easy),
and its quite another to research, write, and send in manuscripts to be
edited (hard), and contribute to a regular magazine, to make a permanent
record of your knowledge and ideas with the intent of informing the audience.
R/C Soaring Digest is close to my heart. Its our last North American
pure RC soaring journal, and it is entirely free of commercial influence.
RCSD is worthy of our support, as readers, as writers, as advertisers.
Heres a tip of the Hatlo Hat to GordySoar for his long-running and
continuing contributions to RCSD.
Here's hoping others will contribute what they can to support RCSD,
and thus support the sport.
