RE: [RCSE] Nose Weight?

2004-04-03 Thread Wes Gibson
I like this idea from Mark Mech about using paraffin wax instead of epoxy to
hold the nose weight in place. Has anyone tried this with standard buck shot
yet. Not sure what size buck shot I have since I'm not a hunter, but it's
fairly small. Maybe as small as bird shot. Sure would be a lot easier to
adjust weight.

I use shot gun pellets, ( old ones )

This summer I needed to come up with some large
nose weights for some mid sized UAV's.
We had an abundance of tungsten powder and paraffin wax,
so I filled the nose with powder, then poured the
molten wax in and stirred the mess up.
I only added enough wax to saturate the powder, it doesn't
take much. The weight can easily be modified by scooping
out the excess with a spoon. Ours were about 12lbs per plane!!!
I was thinking about putting together a glider nose weight kit
with 5oz. of tungsten, and 2oz. wax with a piece of plastic
to glue in as a retainer.
If anyone is interested, I will put them together.
It is only feasible if I order a lot of tungsten, the stuff is fairly
cheap in quantity..

I would think that it might melt in the summer which would be a bit messy.

I like this idea from Mark Mech about using paraffin wax

Hello.
I don't mean to be a pill here but.
I don't think the Wax method would work in the Sacramento valley where
temps in the summer reach upwards of 115 deg.
CA works well, epoxy is more secure.

Put the "shot" in a mini baggy and secure in the nose with a piece of soft foam.

[RCSE] Nose Weight?

2004-03-29 Thread Charlie Miller
Absolutely!
I wouldn't be so concerned with how much weight you have to put in the
glider. Balance it and fly it!
My Emerald was 68 oz.. It had plenty of nose weight.
I do suggest the built up rudder. That's the only mod I had.
I also used volz servo's. I believe they are some of the lightest servo's
there are. It all add's up!
Just a note! On my full scale ASW20, the glider weight was just under 600
LB's .. It needed a minimum of about 150 LB's in the nose to fly!! (pilot)
Cheers
Charlie
