While you guys think of skiing rather than flying in the Northern Hemi-sphere, we Kiwis down here in the South
have been enjoying a new spectator sport just made for folks like us. The first ever glider Grand Prix has just
finished down at the home of Southern Soaring, Omarama, in the spectacular Southern
Alps of New Zealand.
Image watching 3 hour glider races live on a giant TV screen
on the airfield and being able to see all the racers on screen using amazing real
time computer graphics spliced in with cockpit and chase chopper footage. All
the key data is overlaid, like speed, altitude, track and distance to go.
Check out http://www.gp06.com/index.htm
particularly the videos and you get a feel for what we enjoyed as spectators.
An extra benefit was that the organisers asked us to come
along and demonstrate RC gliding and electrics. We had several hours flying
over three days in perfect conditions with F3x class ships of the winches,
DHLGs and electrics actually on the airfield.
Heaven! And with luck we have a new TV sport.
