Pay a visit to your local airfield, ask a plane mechanic for a length of aircraft lockwire.  I use the 0.020" size, stainless steel, you can really crank the tension on it right up.

How about .030 SS mig welding wire. 2lb roll  $15.95 From http://www.grizzly.com/index.html or $17.95 from http://www.mcmaster.com/  or check with your local welding supply store.  2lbs would probably be enough for everyone on the list.
