Ditto here on the Blue top. It's expensive but worth it. I use a battery minder to charge and have had excellent results. DJA RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] Winch Batteries
Whoever moves a liquid lead acid battery around without a battery box is a fool. Their vehicle must be full of white spots and holes in the floor. http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1296485cp=1254885.1255161.1260970parentPage=family At 01:08 PM 5/21/2005, Jim Laurel wrote: For our club winches at SASS, we use pairs of Trojan 6v batteries, wired in series. For my personal winch, I use blue top Optimas, which are just fantastic. They are compact, and never leak. Each one seems to have plenty of power for a day of flying for 5-6 open class planes. I usually bring two for a full day of flying with friends. I tried the yellow top deep cycle and found that they didnt seem to give as much torque. The blue tops are deep cycle/starting marine batteries. --Jim Laurel From: David Whitaker [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, May 20, 2005 3:43 PM To: RCSE Subject: [RCSE] Winch Batteries I know this was discussed some time ago. Re: [RCSE] Winch Batteries
Guilt as charged! But unlike my shorts, my vehicle doesn't suffer any holes in the floor. It's a NAS (North American Spec) Defender 90, lined with a real heavy rubber lining that covers the rear interior floor. NAS D90 in the dunes south of the border: http://exerro.com/galleries/mexico200303/mex15.htm No, this is NOT the ultimate soaring vehicle...sadly. The wheelbase is only 92, so it can just barely carry a couple of unlimited planes (diagonally) and a driver. A 110 would be the better solution. --Jim On May 22, 2005, at 5:57 AM, Steve Meyer wrote: Whoever moves a liquid lead acid battery around without a battery box is a fool. Next down on the list would be Delco Voyagers. Bottom of the list are the cheap batteries at WalMart, Sears, etc unless you want to play the warranty game and keep all the paper work and return them every year. Re: [RCSE] Winch Batteries
Tommy- My charger's clips used to heat up too. I removed the wire, cut it and back to get some nice clean material and soldered it on. Now they don't heat up at all. -Ben Tommy wrote: Back to winch batteries, I just bought a Maxx 29 marine deep cycle battery from Wal Mart. I hooked up a Sears 10 amp automatic charger about 45 minutes ago and it is still pumping at a 10 a/h rate. The clips are pretty warm to the touch. Is this normal for a first charge on this type of battery? Tommy Lamnek RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News.
