Take the lock with you, but use something like a binder ring or a hitch pin on the airline. Securely fasten whatever you use to the case and hope they put it back right if they do open the case.

If you use a lock, hang the key on the lock. Use a cable tie to keep both the key and the lock attached to the case.

Skip Miller has a nice clip that he uses, but I haven't found one quite like it.
