[Soekris] Serial

2008-05-14 Thread Chris Babcock
How do most people here deal with adding a second external serial
connector? Does everybody just grind out a section of the case?

Has there been any discussion of the standard case including a punchout
spot for the second serial port?

[Soekris] CF card not recognised on net5501-70 (again...)

2008-05-14 Thread NICOLAS Jean-François
Hi list,

I known that a recurring problem but it's still unsolved for me.

When I use the latest net5501-70 boards that I've received (071102) with
COMBIOS V1.33 the CF recognition spends about 30s and the CF is always
recognised as Primary Master.
Then I tried to upgrade (V1.33b) or downgrade (V1.32i) COMBIOS without
succeed. I also changed FLASH parameter in COMBIOS without effect.

I always have a grub error (25) after the fastidious CF recognition with
COMBIOS v1.33b but if I enter in COMBIOS and type 'reboot' everything works
fine. That's a major issue because no null-modem cable is connected in our
use-case.

Moreover, if I use the same CF on older board (070422) everything works fine
from the 1st boot attempt. That looks like as an hardware issue (CSEL pin or
something else) but Wim told me that's purely software.

Now, I'm very confused and I hope someone can help me.

Thanks.
J-F.

Hello!

I'm using the cases from http://kd85.com/ ; some of them have proper
holes for both SubD 9 connectors. Pictures of those cases are on
KD85's homepage.

Re: [Soekris] cloning CF cards on OpenBSD 4.3

2008-05-14 Thread Chris Cappuccio
if you want to copy between cards of different sizes, check out growimg.sh from
flashdist which handles fdisk, disklabel, newfs, and tar file copy

it assumes a specific disklabel layout, but you could easily change that

 What are some good/easy methods?

[Soekris] Fwd: Serial

2008-05-14 Thread René Luckow
Soekris also sells serial cables on a PCI bracket now :)

I neatly fold the cable in the case so that it JUST puts the
connector at the lip of the back, then CAREFULLY slide the case over
it. The 1's and 0's do seem to come out flatter, but the Soekris
apparently can straighten them out internally before passing to my
  OS. ;)

and if you're doing a net5501 with the standard case and you're not
stuffing the add-in card slot, check out www.pccables.com or similar. Part #
07121 (DTK) or part # 07106 with your own stuffing works here just dandy. (
 and
if you're being creative with where the stuff on the add-in card terminates,
 you
might even be able to use them *with* an add in card, who knows. ) They also
have some filler panels with the 9 pin port shape punched out twice for a 2-up
arrangement for a USB serial and a legacy serial side-by side -ish ( sorry
 part number not handy )

Thread the bottom of the filler panel with an 8-32 tap and you can use the
 hole
cover screw on the end close to the board for a nice snug fit.

Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with pccables.com, I just play one on TV.
